Job summary

Applications are invited for a Locum Appointment for Service in Palliative Medicine ST3 equivalent.

The post is available from 2 October 2024 until 4 February 2025.

This is a LAS post and is thereforenot recognised for training.

Applicants must have a Basic Medical Degree and have Full GMC registration with a Licence to Practice.

MRCP or equivalent medical Qualification is also required.

Main duties of the job

Routine review of patients under the care of their own clinical base appropriate to the needs of individual patients and care regimes.

Registrar level medical cover for all clinical units and services participating in the South Yorkshire Programme For Higher Specialist Training in Palliative Medicine.

Specialist Palliative Medical Cover for advice, consultations and emergency admissions for primary and secondary care services who refer to clinical units and services participating in the programme.

Activities which a registrar would normally be expected to undertake while on-call are:

  • A review of inpatients on their own base unit
  • Review of specific patients identified as in need of out of hours specialist medical review by colleagues on other units
  • Advice to general practitioners, junior medical staff and clinical nurse specialists concerning patients under their care. If such advice is dependant on a clinical assessment the registrar would be expected to attend the patient out- of-hours if necessary
  • Liaison with primary and secondary care services to facilitate the provision of emergency and out-of-hours therapy or services for patients in need.

About us

The Northern General Hospital has 1,200 beds and an accident and emergency department. The hospital provides orthopaedic, colorectal, plastic and cardiothoracic surgery for the city. There is a large department for the care of the elderly and rehabilitation including a stroke unit. Regional centres for renal medicine and spinal injuries are also on site.

The Sheffield Macmillan Palliative Care Unit opened in May 2002, providing 18 beds in a separate purpose built unit within the Northern General site. Medical staff include two consultants, StR, Advanced Clinical practitioner, and junior medical staff.
