Job summary
We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Medical Laboratory Assistant to support the Scientific and Consultant teams in the department of Histology at the Sheffield Teaching Hospital NHS Trust. Currently based on three sites (the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, the Northern General Hospital and the Chesterfield Royal Hospital), the STH Histology service processes 80,000 requests per year.
The post will be mainly based at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital with rotation to the NGH Satellite Laboratory.
Participation in the laboratory Mon-Fri 8am - 8pm working arrangements, weekend and bank holiday rotas is expected of all staff.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will be required to undertake roles in specimen reception, specimen preparation and processing as well as a range of other duties including computer data entry, operation of laboratory equipment, filing and retrieval of specimens, glass slides and paraffin blocks.
JOB PURPOSE
- Pre-analytical processing of samples to include the receipt, preparation and processing.
- Deal with direct queries from Medical Staff, Nursing Staff and other Service Users including telephone enquiries and taking appropriate action as necessary.
- To assist Scientific Staff in laboratory activities
- To store and retrieve biological material
About us
The STH Histopathology diagnostic service for all tissue specimens (biopsy, surgical resection, cytology and post mortem examination) includes expertise in:
Acute renal disease pathology; renal, cardiac & lung transplant pathology; metabolic bone disease studies; dermatopathology; breast, gynaecology, endocrine, cardiothoracic, orthopaedic, genito-urinary & gastro-intestinal pathology, oncology and neuropathology. The department is a National Specialist Centre for Ophthalmic Pathology & provides diagnostic service to the Sheffield Breast Screening programme.
Sheffield Teaching Hospitals is one of five Trusts involved in the formation of the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw (SYB) Pathology Network. The aim of the Network is to deliver a Pathology Service that provides all SYB patients and clinicians with equitable access to high-quality, innovative laboratory medicine solutions that will ensure the best clinical outcomes for patients.
A collaborative Network will also provide rewarding job and career opportunities for all staff. An Outline Business Case, which described the Target Operating Model for the future Network, has been agreed between Partner Trusts. The proposed Target Operating Model will ultimately lead to the consolidation of services across SYB. As work progresses to establish the Network, staff will be consulted about proposals that may involve them.
