Job summary

Sheffield Teaching Hospitals are offering the exciting opportunity for enthusiastic and conscientious individuals to start a career in Healthcare Science.

You will undertake a Level 2 Healthcare Science Apprenticeship in the Respiratory Physiology Department.

A Healthcare Science Apprentice is employed on a fixed term Apprentice Agreement with the Trust for 14 months. This fixed term apprenticeship contract is designed to give you a set of competencies, work experience and a qualification that could lead to employment within the Healthcare Science sector. The posts are full-time. Candidates will need to be available for a start date to commence studies in April 2024.

Through the Healthcare Science apprenticeship programme you will learn the knowledge, skills and behaviours appropriate to a level 2 Healthcare Science Assistant, whilst also studying towards a level 2 BTEC diploma in Healthcare Science in collaboration with The Sheffield College.

Main duties of the job

Successful Respiratory Physiology candidates will be required to work under the supervision and will be trained to:

  • Measure monitor and record physiological measurements, performing a range of diagnostic investigations.
  • Perform calibration and verification procedures to monitor and maintain all equipment used within the department.
  • Perform all infection control procedures required within the healthcare setting, to facilitate the efficient and effective provision of service.
  • Undertake any admin and clerical duties associated with the role as required. Input personally generated and results of investigations performed by other staff into relevant database systems.
  • Maintain Stocks of Resources, Equipment and Consumables for Scientific, Technical or Clinical Use.

The apprentice allowance as specified in the Minimum Wage Regulations will be paid for the first 12 months. The rate will increase after 12 months in line with these regulations for anyone that is age 19 or over.

This vacancy is advertised on a fixed term contract basis for a period of 14 months due to this being an apprenticeship/training programme. The fixed term contract status of the post holder will be reviewed in accordance with the Trust's legal obligations regarding fixed term contracts.

A learner/applicant must be a UK, EEA, or EU resident for at least the past three years to undertake an apprenticeship training programme.
