Job summary
A number of exciting opportunities have arisen to join the Department of Medicine at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust as a Consultant in General Internal Medicine ( a sub-speciality interest ideally in Cardiology although other interests will be considered)) for a period of 6 months, with a possibility of longer term extension.
This is a whole-time (10 PA) post and has been developed as part of a broader ongoing re-organisation and expansion of the Department of Medicine. The department manages a large number of both specialist and general medical wards. In addition, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals is one of the largest Trusts in the country and provides extensive specialist care both locally and regionally. The posts can be tailored to an individual's sub-speciality interest.
Any candidate who is unable for personal reasons to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post; if such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Clinical Director.
Main duties of the job
The appointee will be responsible for the provision of general medical care to medical in-patients at the Northern General Hospital. The duties of the role will include:-
- A daily review (M-F) of patients under their care.
- Out of hours and weekend cover, as part of the consultant on call rota, including supporting the acute take on the Medical Admissions Unit.
- Where possible patients will be allocated to match the specialist interest.
- Be required to cover for colleagues during periods of absence. They will have a continuing responsibility for the patients in their care and for the proper functioning of the Department
- Work to develop a dedicated specialist interest, if appropriate, in conjunction with appropriate allied specialties
- Provide professional supervision and management of junior medical staff
- Take part in the administrative work relevant to his/her clinical commitment, and to contribute as appropriate to the work of the Directorate.
- Take an active part in the Clinical Governance activities of the Directorate, both in relation to continuing professional development and the quality and effectiveness of clinical services.
