Job summary
This is an exciting opportunity for a Clinical Scientist with radiotherapy experience to join a friendly and enthusiastic team in a busy Radiosurgery Physics department providing scientific and technical support to the National Centre for Stereotactic Radiosurgery.
The National Centre in Sheffield has been treating patients with the Gamma Knife since 1985 and has recently installed the world's first Gamma Knife Esprit unit providing exciting opportunities for development. The centre currently treats around 950 patients per year. The post provides a mix of experience in an area where radiotherapy physics, MR physics and diagnostic radiation physics are all applied.
You will participate in all aspects of the service including:
- Radiosurgery treatment planning.
- Treatment delivery.
- Equipment quality assurance and dosimetry.
- Development and maintenance of our Quality Management System.
- Patient data analysis for service evaluation and the research and development activities of the department.
Applications will be considered from trainees who are close to completion of the Scientist Training Programme who would be appointed at band 6 until registration is confirmed.

Main duties of the job
To take an active role in the provision of medical physics support for the stereotactic radiosurgery services, including the scientific input at all stages of the patient preparation, target localisation, planning and treatment processes.
To ensure all work complies with current UK legislation for work with ionising radiation (IRR 2017, IR(ME)R 2017)
To take an active role in the maintenance and development of the quality management system (ISO 9001:2015) within the radiosurgery service.
To participate in the development of new techniques, advising and implementing as and when required while maintaining patient safety.
To participate in the physics-based research and development of techniques within the section
Please note this vacancy is banded dependent upon applicants skills/experience relevant to this post. The banding of the successful applicant/s will start at Band 6 unless applicants meet the necessary threshold of skills and experience required to start on Band 7.
About us
The Radiosurgery Physics Section provides scientific support to the National Centre for Stereotactic Radiosurgery, which offers Gamma Knife treatment for patients from the across the UK. Gamma Knife Radiosurgery is a highly specialised radiotherapy treatment for abnormalities in the brain which requires precise target localisation, complex planning and accurate patient positioning (to sub-millimetre accuracy) for treatment.
The section consists of a highly specialist team of 3 clinical scientists and 4 clinical technologists who possess a unique combination of multi-disciplinary skills which are applied in the localisation, treatment planning and treatment delivery processes. The section is responsible for ensuring that the Gamma Knife radiotherapy device is maintained and quality assured to the highest standards to ensure the safe and accurate radiation delivery. The section contributes to the continuous improvement of the unique service through research and development and the incorporation of innovative techniques and technology.
