Job summary

The Clinical Radiosurgery Assistant will assist other members of the Radiosurgery Team in delivering a high standard of direct patient care and associated duties. The role will assist the wide multidisciplinary team to provide and ensure the provision of a safe, efficient, quality service of care and treatment for patients undergoing radiosurgery, in the National Centre for Stereotactic Radiosurgery Department. Gamma knife Radiosurgery combine a succession of procedures, utilising high-resolution imaging, sub-millimetre radiation dose planning and accurate delivery of gamma radiation to intracranial targets. This service is provided at local, national and international levels.

The client base includes patients of all ages from paediatrics to the elderly. They all have brain lesions of either a benign or malignant nature, either of which could be disabling or life threatening. As a result of their diagnosis, patient often present to the department with a variety of physical, mental or psychological deficits.

Main duties of the job

  • Preparation of the frame and framing room prior to the procedure using a sterile technique
  • Admission and preparation of the patient prior to the procedure
  • Assist the multidisciplinary team with the frame fitting procedure
  • Perform observations, patient care and comfort through the day
  • Data inputting duties
  • Assist with Health and safety compliance/audit
  • Assist with Fire safety
  • Venepuncture and cannulation procedures
  • Processing frame and equipment for decontamination

About us

The National Centre for Stereotactic Radiosurgery has over 35 years of experience in using radiosurgery to treat complex lesions within the brain and was the first unit in the world to install the latest in gamma knife technology, the Elekta Esprit. The unit is comprised of a multidisciplinary team of radiographers, physics and neurosurgeons who provide high quality treatment to patients both nationally and internationally. This role is within the team of Therapeutic Radiographers, who are a small close knit team of 13, providing highly specialised care and treatment to patients with complex neurological conditions.
