An exciting opportunity has arisen for a registered midwife or nurse, interested in Public Health and genetic literacy to help facilitate access to genetics information and advice.
The role is part of the genetic literacy project in South Yorkshire, which is part of a national Public Health England Project to improve access to genomics information/advice and support for couples who are related (consanguineous) and planning a family.
The role involves running preconception advice clinics in South Yorkshire. Liaising with other health professionals who work with the target population and promoting the service offer to facilitate referrals. Offering education on this topic area, as necessary. The clinics will be offered via Childrens Hubs/relevant locations in the community and service users' homes, if necessary. Sensitive discussion of the service user's family tree is required to determine inheritance risk and a good working knowledge of genetics and inheritance is required to discuss potential genetic risk and additional services available.
Main duties of the job
Improving quality and outcomes
To work collaboratively across the local maternity system in alignment with the national maternity ambition. To improve birth outcomes for women from predominantly Pakistani ethnic groups, but any individuals who are at an increased risk of having children with AR genetic condition related to consanguinity.

To act as a champion for women and their interests and involve the public and patients in the policy development and decision making of the provider trust. To ensure all public and patient contact with the office is of the highest professional standard. To embed patient and public involvement within maternity services at all levels of decision making.
