Job summary

There is an exciting opportunity for an HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientist or a Trainee Biomedical Scientist to join our team in the Immunology Department at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals. Training will be provided in all sections of the laboratory. Relevant laboratory experience would be considered essential.

Sheffield Teaching Hospitals is one of five Trusts involved in the formation of the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw (SYB) Pathology Network. The aim of the Network is to deliver a Pathology Service that provides all SYB patients and clinicians with equitable access to high-quality, innovative laboratory medicine solutions that will ensure the best clinical outcomes for patients.

A collaborative Network will also provide rewarding job and career opportunities for all staff. An Outline Business Case, which described the Target Operating Model for the future Network, has been agreed between Partner Trusts. The proposed Target Operating Model will ultimately lead to the consolidation of services across SYB. As work progresses to establish the Network, staff will be consulted about proposals that may involve them.

Main duties of the job

Carrying out immunology and specialised protein testing.

Training in all areas of the laboratory.

Contributing to the Department's assay development programme.

Supporting the Department's Quality Management System through audit, SOP review, troubleshooting.

Please also note this vacancy is banded dependent upon applicants experience/qualifications relevant to this post. The banding of the successful applicant/s will start at Band 5 unless applicants meet the necessary threshold of skills/qualifications and experience required to start on Band 6.

The Immunology and Protein Reference Unit is situated on the Northern General Hospital campus in new purpose built laboratories. The department has an extensive repertoire of immunology and specialist protein tests (see www.immqas.org.uk/PRU tab) with samples referred from all over the UK and further afield. There is also a proactive programme of new assay development. Registered Biomedical Scientists will be encouraged to undertake the IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Immunology.
