We are looking for an experienced Senior Biomedical Scientist with demonstrable expertise to lead on the procurement and implementation of Digital Pathology. They will support the team with training, whilst providing technical and subject matter expertise to drive, maintain and optimise digital pathology to support patient diagnosis. You will demonstrate you have worked previously to agreed timescales whilst providing clear direction and offering solutions aligned with a large-scale programme.

The Lead Biomedical Scientist for Digital Pathology is pivotal role within the SYBP Histopathology Service and Programme Team to deliver digital transformation. You will work as part of the SYBP Digital Pathology Project Team leading alongside the SYBP Discipline lead for Histopathology, Site Laboratory Leads, local IT teams, the Histopathology Consultant DP lead and the clinical workforce in the implementation of digital pathology and associated Artificial Intelligence (image analysis tools).

Main duties of the job

You will be responsible for the increased rollout of digital pathology used for primary diagnosis across the network. You will provide technical and subject matter expertise to drive, maintain and increasingly optimise digital pathology to support diagnosis of patients.

The Lead BMS will be the main link between the scientific and technical workforce tasked with preparing and producing the digital images which Consultant Histopathologists will increasingly report from digital images. You will take a lead role to support training and validation for consultants including identifying, creating, and maintaining slide and image training sets for each clinical reporting team.

The Lead BMS will function as the key link between system supplier, local operational services, clinical and scientific teams to ensure that the digital pathology is implemented successfully, remains operational and infrastructures are fully maintained. You will also support system integration and sharing of technical knowledge with all necessary stakeholders.

The principal responsibility will be to lead the SYBP Histopathology Service in all areas relating to digital pathology management such as workflow, management of change, quality, risk and data as well as training. The role will include development and implementation of departmental policies/harmonised SOPs relating to all aspects of digital pathology (e.g., technical implementation, daily diagnostic use and image management / storage).

  • BSc Hons level qualification in Biomedical Sciences, appropriately accredited by the IBMS or AHCS.
  • Registered with the HCPC as a Biomedical Scientist.
  • MSc level qualification; plus Academic Level 8 training relevant to Digital Pathology or demonstrable equivalent experience and knowledge of the theoretical and practical aspects of digital pathology, including image acquisition, data storage, workflow, AI and governance.

Desirable

  • Significant range of short specialist courses on relevant IT systems Interfacing and networks or equivalent experience.
  • A management qualification (e.g., Diploma in Management Studies) or demonstrable experience in a management role.
  • Chartered scientist Qualification related to specific area of responsibility, e.g. IOSH, Certificate in extended practice in quality management.

Experience

  • Demonstrable experience of managing Pathology teams.
  • In depth specialist experience including installation and interfacing to other IT systems and imaging equipment and soft/hardware management.
