Job summary

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us.

This is a FIXED TERM Contract with the position commencing in the month of February 2026

Please see below for detailed job description of the role.

Main duties of the job

This is a full-time position for a candidate wishing to develop skills in cardiothoracic anaesthesia and cardiac intensive care. UHS has a long- established, successful competency-based training programme. It is one of the busiest NHS cardiothoracic centres with excellent patient outcomes for both acquired and congenital heart disease. Full training in transoesophageal is available.

You will be working in a team to care for patients requiring cardiothoracic surgery and procedures from wide and densely populated geographical area on the South Coast of England. The service is 24 hours per day and consultant led.

The cardiac intensive care is a 16-bedded ITU with all aspects of cardiac support available. However, UHS is not a cardiac transplant or ECMO centre so there will be limited exposure to ventricular assist devices and ECMO (5-10 adult cardiac ECMO per year on average).

The unit is well staffed allowing for excellent teaching opportunities and the ability to develop team working skills within a multidisciplinary team. You will work in a team of,11 senior clinical fellows and 1 ACCP alongside 4 UK anaesthesia residents, 5 specialty doctors, 1 specialist doctor, 17 consultants in cardiac anaesthesia and ITU, thoracic anaesthesia consultants and allied health care staff.

You will also be encouraged to actively participate in the teaching, quality improvement and research programmes running within the department.
