Main duties of the job

We are looking a versatile, talented clinician to join the General Paediatric team at Southampton Children's Hospital.

Southampton Children's hospital is looking to appoint a consultant paediatricians to an 8PA post that will work between the dynamic general paediatric and Bursledon house teams. You will also be the general paediatric mental health champion.

Southampton Children's Hospital provides a paediatric service to the children of Southampton has a population of 400,000. In addition, the Trust provides tertiary regional services in the complete range of paediatric specialties. The total tertiary population serviced by Southampton University Hospital NHS Trust is approximately 2.8 million.

Job responsibilities

You will contribute to the provision of the General Paediatric group job plan which provides cover to all general paediatric in-patients, Out-patients (both routine and urgent) and on-call. Within the general paediatric activity you will have outpatient general paediatric caseload (based at Lymington initially), have shifts on our short stay unit, which includes assessment of urgent referrals and medical cases in the emergency department and participate in the out of ours general paediatric on call rota (1:12). You will take on the role of mental health champion, facilitating join working between mental and physical health. Bursledon House is a specialist inpatient facility within Southampton Childrens Hospital, which provides secondary and tertiary intensive multi-disciplinary assessment and/or management of physical, psychological, educational and social needs for children and young people. You will take on a case-load and take full part in the day-to-day running of the unit. You will also support the clinical lead in developing the service.

We are looking to appoint a well-motivated individual with excellent broad general paediatric experience. They will have the ability and enthusiasm to explore and develop the requirements of the post and adapt their role as required. We recognise that skills may need to be developed over time to take on this role and we are looking for a versatile and talented clinician who would look forward to the challenge of developing their clinical roles as well as the service to best meet the changing needs of general paediatric patients.

The department has a strong ethos in education and research and the successful applicant will be supported to participate in this.

  • Full GMC Registration
  • MRCPCH or equivalent
  • Experience of working in acute paediatrics including paediatric emergency and assessment environment.
  • Wide range of clinic experience
  • Training and experience of child protection activities
  • APLS trained
  • Appropriate clinical skills involved in diagnosis & stabilising the ill or injured child
  • Involvement in clinical governance

Desirable

  • CCST or CCT in General Paediatrics or eligible for above within 6 months of appointment.
  • Appraisal & assessment skills
  • Experience of delivering a community service
  • Experience in service improvement
  • Experience of working closely within an MDT
  • Special interests in general paediatric fields especially complex presentations, psychosocial medicine and mental health
