Main duties of the job

University Hospitals Southampton NHS Trust is a large tertiary centre university teaching hospital; we are looking for an enthusiastic and dedicated SHO grade doctor to join our medical teams.

Successful candidates will join a supportive and highly skilled multi-disciplinary team with an excellent teaching programme and a patient first culture. This is an opportunity for a doctor looking to enhance their clinical skills in an acute hospital setting, managing patients acutely unwell through to discharge. You will have support and consultant clinical supervision to gain experience and career progression.

Job description

Job responsibilities

As a medical SHO you will be responsible for managing a range of acute medical conditions. You will work closely with consultants, registrars and supervise FY1s, as well as working within the wider MDT to deliver comprehensive and compassionate patient care.

You will manage acutely unwell patients in our acute medical unit and on the medical wards, performing initial assessments, organising investigations and implementing treatment. You will be asked to participate in daily ward rounds, either led by yourself or with a senior, managing chronic conditions along with the acute episode and communicating well with the patient and MDT. You will be part of the out-of-hours on call team covering the wards or the medical take and work to the junior doctors contract of a maximum of 48 hours per week.

An enthusiastic doctor who has experience in the acute setting and interested in career development and progression.

Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust appointed (non-training fellow doctors and dentists).

Successful candidates will have an educational framework equivalent to training grade doctors, and there will be a named educational supervisor assigned at the start of the post. The opportunity for Continued Professional Development (CPD) is highly supported and encouraged by the Trust, with options available to take study leave. All licensed doctors must meet the GMC requirements for revalidation and there will be an annual appraisal to support this process.

Grades for Trust appointed (non-training) fellows will be paid a basic salary at a nodal pay point linked to the grade, at the rate set out in the National Medical and Dental pay circular.

Basic salary detailed below plus any additional remuneration (as applicable) for hours set out in the doctors work schedule (e.g. additional hours, weekend allowance, and any hours which attract enhanced pay)
