Southampton Children's Hospital (SCH) has a exciting opportunity for a motivated technician to join our paediatric respiratory sleep team. We are looking for a technician with relevant experience to join our friendly team as a band 3 to support our overnight sleep service. This role will be 2 weeks of 2 nights and 2 weeks of 3 nights worked across a 4 week roster period, according to the needs of the service. On occasion day hours may be required to carry out mandatory training and professional development courses.

The respiratory sleep service facilitates inpatient studies on most nights of the week, admitting both elective patients who are referred for a sleep study or carrying out studies on acute inpatients. We are a friendly and supportive team comprised of two sleep technicians who run our overnight studies, three respiratory and sleep technicians, five sleep physiologists, two Long Term Ventilation nurse specialists with a dual role, and 1 lead physiologist.

Job responsibilities

What youll do:You will carry out overnight sleep studies on elective admissions or acute inpatients. Following a period of orientation and training you will support patients and their parents on the night of their study, set up and monitor their study overnight and troubleshoot equipment when necessary to achieve high quality signals and data. You will download the data at the end of the study, ensure artefact removal, mark the periods of sleep and upload data to patients charts. You will flag any study that sits outside of given parameters once downloaded. You will also carry the on call phone on some night shifts providing telephone support on home clinic days between the hours of 1900-0500 to assist families carrying out home studies. For most nights this is a lone working role with support from ward staff.

You must have: the ability to work nights flexibly across a 7 day period the ability to communicate with a wide range of people in a variety of settings the ability to work independently, assessing and intervening as necessary to ensure patient safety the ability to work with respiratory equipment and trouble shoot problems good organisation skills and time management skills

The childrens hospital provides specialist intensive and high dependency care, regional cardiac, neurological and neurosurgery, regional orthopaedic, urology, general, renal and ear nose and throat surgery and is the regional oncology centre. The children hospital has a dedicated childrens emergency department day surgical / medical unit, childrens outpatients and Bursledon House which is a specialist unit treating a range of conditions. Southampton Childrens Hospital is a centre for paediatric research projects.

Within the site also sits our tertiary level 3 medical and surgical neonatal unit.

Our specialist paediatric consultants, nurses and wider healthcare teams offer a wide range of diagnosis, treatment and support facilities for children and their parents.The Childrens Hospital offers many learning and development opportunities to help you achieve the career you aspire to with support from ward based Clinical Facilitators and a central Paediatric Education Team.
