Main duties of the job

We invite candidates to apply for our Glaucoma training fellowship, involving the opportunity to gain tertiary level training in the diagnosis and management of all specialised Glaucoma conditions as well as the opportunity to undertake cataract surgery and participate in national trials under the supervision of our substantive Consultants.

The department will have capacity for over 120,000 outpatient visits, 6000 inpatients and 24,000 in the Eye Casualty throughout the year. General ophthalmic work is provided for the population of Southampton with tertiary referrals in the fields of special interest drawn from Wessex and the Channel Islands. The department also runs outpatient clinics and operating lists at Lymington New Forest Hospital.

Southampton Eye Unit

The Eye Unit is a purpose-built block within the University Hospital Southampton. The department underwent an exciting expansion. The department consists of an inpatient ward and custom-built day-surgery unit and three fully equipped ophthalmic theatres in the Southampton Eye unit and dedicatedeye theatre on the Lymington site. There is an additional dedicated administrative area including a refurbished junior doctors mess and seminar room, an ophthalmic casualty department and an independent outpatient facility which includes a dedicated injection suite and minor operating theatre.

We recently expanded our outpatient facilities and currently have 28 cubicles for patient reviews including the paediatric wing. We have some of the latest state-of-the-art imaging equipment. This includes have 7 Heidelberg OCTs, 5 Topcons OCTs, 3 Optos, including a California and 5 Digital slit lamps. We also have 2 Solix OCT scanners as our latest addition.

There are several defined treatment and investigation areas for ultrasound, Pascal and YAG/SLT laser, fluorescein angiography and visual field analysis. We also run OPD clinics in our Lymington site which consist of 4 OPD cubicles.

The department also have a dedicated mobile unit which is runs the glaucoma virtual assessment unit

This post is an excellent opportunity for a clinician to develop their research and clinical experience in ophthalmology. It is expected that the appointee will publish research papers during their fellowship. They will also be expected to actively participate in the delivery of our teaching programmes and also complete audit projects.

The post has a 50% commitment to the general on-call rota.
