Due to a National Spinal Cord Injury pathway review, we are excited to have the opportunity to increase the specialist support to children and young people with a spinal cord injury ( traumatic and non-traumatic) at Southampton Children's Hospital (SCH).
This new role will be involved with the whole spinal cord injury pathway, ensuring holistic care from admission through discharge and into follow up care, including training and upskilling staff.
The post will link with National Spinal cord centres receiving educational support from them and work with regional Neurosciences network to ensure regional and National pathways and guidelines are developed and adhered to.
This post will be embedded within our established, nationally accredited Level 2A Paediatric neurorehabilitation MDT, and part of our Major Trauma centre rehabilitation service.Our neurosurgery, oncology, major trauma centre and rehabilitation services cover CYP from Hampshire, Dorset, Wiltshire, East Sussex, West Sussex, Isle of Wight, the Channel Islands, and beyond.
We have a well-established MDT, including OT, physiotherapy, speech and language, psychology, dietetics, hospital school and play therapy, specialist nursing and medical input.

The post holder will work autonomously and will offer specialist SCI advice, acting as a source of expertise and knowledge for families and other health care professionals. Existing patient pathways vary depending on presentation and co-pathology; however all new SCI patients start their rehabilitation journey at SCH with intensive inpatient rehabilitation, some children will remain with us to discharge and others will move to other hospitals. The post holder will need to work within multiple MDTs including neuro rehab, oncology, orthopaedic, neurosurgery respiratory and urology. They will also work alongside existing B7 and B6 neurology nurse specialists, to provide a high level of assessment and management for CYP with SCI.
Our expectations:
Act as Keyworker for newly acquired SCI patients, linking with family and MDT to ensure consistency of care and accuracy of information sharing. Act as an advocate for child/young person throughout the SCI pathway Act as a resource for information for MDT staff and families Provide a telephone advice service post-discharge. Provide support for return to school and transition throughout school including education staff training. Provide training for UHS staff, family, and child/young person about the importance of consistent individualised SCI management care plans including bladder and bowel care and autonomic dysreflexia. Lead discharge planning including co-ordination of equipment and care packages as needed. Liaise with National SCI centre to ensure SCI care is equitable and of a high standard across our region. Ensure appropriate timely transfer to SCI centres when required. Provide outreach support and advice to local hospitals within our region for patients admitted with SCI. Link with external agencies including charity sector support services. Support transition to adult services and promote independence. Provide nurse led clinical reviews and establish nurse led clinics. Provide special nursing input to other MDT/ neuro clinics. Undertake clinical assessment of SCI recovery using standardised outcome measurements such as ASIA. Complete UHS database and National database data collection.

An enthusiastic, motivated, dynamic, and experienced nurse, with a knowledge and interest in the care of SCI patients Someone with excellent communications skills, who can deliver teaching to a variety of audiences, with differing training needs. Comprehensive B6 or B7 experience, specifically with children and young people with spinal cord injury. Experience of service development and a passion to drive services forward embodying Trust values. The ability to work both autonomously, and as part of an MDT, being respectful of professional roles and responsibilities. Confidence to engage with national and local networks, promoting and supporting the growth and development of the UHS SCI service.
