Job summary

We are looking to recruit an experienced Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS) within our Out of Hours (OOH) Medicine service. You will need to have experience of working as an ACP in acute health care and have sound clinical knowledge whilst also demonstrating experience in the 4 pillars of advanced clinical practice. Advanced clinical practitioners will be expected to have an MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice (Advanced Nurse/clinical Practitioner) or a recognised equivalent, e.g. e-portfolio.

The OOH trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioners (tACP) / Advanced Clinical Practitioners (ACP) are central to the OOH multidisciplinary team.

Job responsibilities

The ACPs are pivotal in the triage, assessment, ordering and interpretation of appropriate tests and investigations, and treatment, including non medical prescribing, of acutely unwell medical patients out of hours. The OOH ACP is a key leadership role within the OOH medicine team, working alongside both medical and ward based teams to ensure that patients are seen by the right person, at the right time. Providing clinical expertise across a footprint of over 333 beds, covering all speciality medicine and medicine for older people (MOP). This is an incredibly varied and exciting role.

As an Advanced Clinical Practitioner you are expected to work in conjunction with the 4 pillars of advanced Practice (Multi-Professional framework for advanced Clinical practice in England, Health Education England, 2017) Expert clinical practice Leadership and management, in order to improve and transform services. Research application of existing research and contributing to new research. Education and Development of self and others.

The OOH service currently covers twilight and night shifts across Monday-Friday nights. And 24/7 provision at the weekends and on bank holidays, through a shift pattern of long days, twilights and nights.

If successful, you will play a key part in delivering specialist Out of hours training and education to ward based multi-professional teams across the Trust.

Practitioners will be encouraged and supported to undertake quality improvement / research projects to further improve patient care and service delivery.

The successful candidate will provide clinical leadership and be an excellent role model for the multi-professional teams they are working in collaboration with.

  • MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice -full master (180 credits) Or equivalency pathway -the portfolio route -recognition by HEE centre of Advanced practice, via the supported portfolio route. Including NMP where professional registration permits. Or have formally credentialed on a nationally recognised specialty specific Advanced Clinical Practice programme for example FICM or RCEM EM ACP
