The department of Anaesthesia at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust are delighted to be able to commence recruitment for the Anaesthesia Associate Programme.
Successful candidates will complete this role in a blended learning environment; using clinical sessions in conjunction with online learning and tutorials to gain the practical skills and knowledge required for successful progression through their Anaesthesia Associate MSc through University College London.
On completion of your training, registration and acquisition of a license to practice you will join the growing Anaesthesia workforce at UHS in delivering supervised anaesthetics to our local communities.

As a trainee Anaesthetic Associate - the post holder will complete this role in a blended learning environment; using clinical sessions in conjunction with their online learning and tutorials to gain the practical skills and knowledge required for successful progression through their Anaesthesia Associate MSc. This will include, but is not limited to:
a) Learning how to deliver anaesthesia, monitor and maintain the condition of patients, and conduct the induction and emergence from anaesthesia under the supervision of a consultant anaesthetist or anaesthesia associate.
b) Learning how to safely and correctly administer drugs for induction and maintenance of anaesthesia, intra-operative fluids and post-operative analgesia under the direct supervision of a consultant anaesthetist or anaesthesia associate.
c) Learning how to undertake pre-operative and post-operative patient assessments
Successful graduation requires passing assessments consisting of both applied written knowledge tests and an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE).
Upon satisfactory completion of the MSc in Anaesthesia and Perioperative Care the postholder will progress to Anaesthesia Associate - the post holder will then provide anaesthetic services which include: assisting with anaesthesia, monitoring, and maintaining the condition of patients, and under supervision, conduct the induction and emergence from anaesthesia.
The role may involve providing anaesthesia in a flexible capacity on a 1:1 or 2:1 basis.
In addition to this the post holder will provide advanced clinical skills by undertaking advanced practice in areas such as regional anaesthesia, conscious sedation, support for major surgery, and prescribing.
Essential qualities required include but are not limited to; exemplary communication skills, extensive experience of team working, previous participation in research/ audit or academic activities, and should be able to demonstrate continual learning and a desire for progression.
