Job summary

Southampton Children's Hospital is looking for Band 3 Health Care Assistants to support vacancies across our Children's hospital.

You will be required to support the ward teams in looking after a range of patients within their specific specialities . You will be required to work across all shift patterns to support the ward in ensuring safe staffing for our patients and colleagues.

As part of this opportunity you will be supported to complete your care certificate if you have not already done so as well as looking at further development opportunities.

Please note that in the current climate there may be times when you are asked to cover shifts in other areas across the Trust which will include night shifts.

Southampton Children's hospital is a 115 bedded hospital catering for both local and regional children from the Wessex Region including the Channel Isles. Southampton's Children's Hospital is a Major Paediatric Trauma Centre in the region

The children's hospital provides specialist intensive and high dependency care, regional neurological and neuro surgery, regional orthopaedic, urology, general, renal and ear nose and throat surgery and is the regional oncology centre. The children hospital has a dedicated children's emergency department, day surgical / medical unit, children's outpatients and Bursledon House which is a specialist unit treating a range of conditions. Southampton Children's Hospital is a centre for paediatric research projects

Within the site also sits our tertiary level 3 medical and surgical neonatal unit

Our specialist paediatric consultants, nurses and wider healthcare teams offer a wide range of diagnosis, treatment and support facilities for children and their parents

Your Responsibilities

You will be working in a team that consists of both qualified and unqualified staff at Southampton Childrens Hospital, based at the Southampton General site.

JADW is the Childrens hospitals day ward which predominately runs from 7.30 am to 20.00hrs Mon to Friday. Some weekend working will be required.

The unit is both a surgical and medical day unit meeting the needs of both the local population and tertiary referrals. Specialist nurses support the nursing team with the medical care that is given to the children on JADW. The unit cares for children from the ages of 3 months to 18 years. The unit strives to deliver high quality day care to the children and their families.

PB is a paediatric oncology unit with 12 inpatient beds and day ward facilities caring for children 0-16 years. The ward supports multidisciplinary working across nursing, medical and therapy services. The ward caters for children across the Wessex Network as well as with external agencies such as palliative and community services.

What youll do
  • Assist in the provision of high standard individualised care, under the supervision of the registered nurse/ practitioner and others in the health care professional team.
  • Work in a collaborative and co-operative manner, and to recognise and respect their particular contribution within the care team.
  • Acknowledge personal beliefs and wishes of patients.
  • Communicate with individuals in ways, which are appropriate and take account of individual needs and requests
  • Undertake, record, report and escalate information relating to care accurately and in timely wa
