Job summary

We are looking for an HCPC registered dietitian to join our oncology dietetic service based at Southampton General Hospital. The post holder will specialise in the dietetic management of adult haematology patients and work with our teenage young adult (TYA) cancer unit. The post covers a variety of settings including the bone marrow transplant unit, haematology wards, haematology outpatients, radiotherapy and chemotherapy units as well as acute oncology wards and oncology outpatients.The department of dietetics and speech and language therapy employs approximately 130 staff, with clinical experts working across the range of specialties, providing both acute and community services in adults and paediatrics.You will join the acute adult dietetic team at Southampton General Hospital. This is a busy, hardworking team known for its friendliness, support and development opportunities. There are regular internal CPD sessions and the opportunity to engage in service evaluation and improvement.Our Oncology unit is one of 12 regional cancer centres in the UK, serving a population of around 1.7million people.

Job responsibilities

What youll doYou will: Be responsible for the specialist provision of a dietetic service to haematology and TYA cancer patients undergoing multiple modality oncology treatment. Work in a variety of clinical settings including acute oncology wards, radiotherapy clinic, chemotherapy outpatients. Attend and provide input to haematology and TYA multidisciplinary clinics and meetings. Provide complex nutritional support to TYA oncology patients and adult haematology patients including management of enteral feeding, complex home enteral feeding discharges, and nutritional management of radiotherapy/chemotherapy related side effects. Work with an experienced team of oncology dietitians covering upper GI, head and neck, gynaecology, chemotherapy and general oncology patients. Be a key member of the multidisciplinary teams working closely with haematologists, clinical nurse specialists, nutrition support team and ward nurses. You will also be required to liaise closely with oncology teams at other hospitals. Provide educational talks on the importance of nutrition in oncology to inform patients, nurses and doctors. Be involved with the supervision and support of junior dietitians and dietetic assistants as well as student training.

What were looking forWe are looking for someone who has a keen interest in oncology, with evidence of relevant, strong clinical skills. Flexibility, ability to prioritise and manage a busy, complex caseload is essential. You must have excellent communication skills as well as an empathic nature to help patients manage their long term condition and be aware of the psychological impact this may have. You should have experience of working with complex nutritional support patients requiring enteral nutrition.

We have a large radiotherapy unit containing 6 linear accelerators, 6 oncology inpatient wards, acute oncology unit, chemotherapy units, Macmillan centre and multiple oncology outpatient clinics. Southampton is a leading centre for cancer research and clinical trials. Patients undergoing intensive chemotherapy for haematological malignancy or transplantation are managed in a 21 bedded specialist unit and a 6 bedded TYA unit.
