Job summary
The Royal College of Surgeons, in collaboration with the Society of British Neurological Surgeons, has previously granted approval for a 12 month fellowship in neuro-oncological surgery at UHS as part of the National Senior Surgical Fellowship Scheme. The fellowship is designed to provide post-CCT neurosurgical trainees with an opportunity to develop the comprehensive knowledge and skills in neuro-oncology required for appointment as a specialist neuro-oncological surgical consultant.
WNC provides neurosurgical services to a population of 3 million in central southern England and the Channel Islands. Neurosurgical services are organised around sub-specialty interests in line with national guidelines with 2 neurosurgeons designated as specialist neuro-oncological surgeons in accordance with NICE IOG for brain and CNS tumours. All adult neurosurgery for non-skull base cranial tumours is carried out by these surgeons.

You will be actively involved in the weekly combined neuro-oncology clinic and MDT meeting and attend regular operating sessions and academic meetings. You will gain experience in all aspects of surgery for primary and secondary intrinsic tumours, including day-case surgery, high-volumes of awake neurosurgery, insular gliomas, intraventricular tumours and meningiomas. Additionally, there will be opportunities to be involved in combined procedures with plastic surgery involving extensive reconstruction following tumour resection, using transposition and microvascular flaps. During this year you will be often working at consultant level, managing an oncology waiting list, running lists and clinics independently as well as under supervision. This will help a transition from trainee to fully independent consultant practice.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust appointed (non-training fellow doctors and dentists).
Successful candidates will have an educational framework equivalent to training grade doctors, and there will be a named educational supervisor assigned at the start of the post. The opportunity for Continued Professional Development (CPD) is highly supported and encouraged by the Trust, with options available to take study leave. All licensed doctors must meet the GMC requirements for revalidation and there will be an annual appraisal to support this process.
Grades for Trust appointed (non-training) fellows will be paid a basic salary at a nodal pay point linked to the grade, at the rate set out in the National Medical and Dental pay circular. Basic salary detailed below plus any additional remuneration (as applicable) for hours set out in the doctors work schedule (e.g. additional hours, weekend allowance, and any hours which attract enhanced pay)
