An opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated nurse to join the management team at Hamwic House as a Sister/Charge Nurse. Hamwic House is a purpose built unit at University Hospital Southampton which houses the SACT (Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapies) treatment area, oncology outpatient clinics, phlebotomy services, and much more. The successful applicant will join Hamwic House which is part of a regional cancer centre providing specialist care for Oncology patients. Hamwic House provides several services such as anti cancer treatments, supportive therapies, blood product infusions, phlebotomy and PICC line insertions to Oncology patients aged 25 and above in an outpatient setting. The unit supports the wider area by providing an outreach service to treat patients closer to home. This service takes place at Lymington hospital, with scope to develop this service further, meeting the NHS England target of treating patients closer to home.
As a Hamwic House Band 6 you will be expected to undertake audits to ensure patient safety and clinical quality, and be proactive in initiating changes to support improvements to the service. You will be managing a small team of nurses, HCAS, and housekeepers by completing annual appraisals, supporting training needs of the team, and being involved in management processes. As well a managerial responsibilities as a cancer care band 6 you will be expected to carry the cancer care staffing bleep. This will involve supporting the inpatient and outpatient wards by ensuring safe staffing levels and problem solving issues as they arise. You will become a highly skilled professional leading to opportunities for future career development from ACP, CNS and managerial roles.
Hamwic house will see over 100 patients a day, which includes patients for clinic appointments, blood tests and treatments. The unit comprises of 18 treating spaces 2 side rooms, 1 procedure room, 12 clinic rooms, 5 virtual clinic rooms and phlebotomy room. Our service operates 8am-8pm Mon-Fri, 8am-4pm Saturday and a blood taking service on Sunday 8am-4pm.
You will be in charge of the day to day running of the unit You will assist the Band 7 team in service improvement projects You will be a role model to you fellow colleagues and offer managerial support. You will undertake managerial task such as IPRs, sickness reviews and HR processs You will carry the Cancer care staffing bleep. You will provide ongoing care Oncology patients Participate in individual care needs of patients and develop appropriate care plans to implement and evaluate Monitor patient care and interventions appropriately Recognise deterioration in patients condition at an early stage, (including neutropenic patients) Refer to the senior nurse and medical team appropriately You will be encouraged to develop your knowledge and skills in cancer nursing IV skills including cannulation and phlebotomy You will be able to administer SACT and supportive therapies to Oncology patients. You will be able to deliver Chemotherapy closer to patients homes in our outreach services. You will have the opportunity to learn specialised skills such as assisting with IT chemotherapy, Inserting NG tubes, become an expert in caring for CVADs.
