Job summary

This is an opportunity to join the regional Thoracic Surgical Team at Southampton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

You will work closely with 5 other Consultant Thoracic Surgeons in an established high-volume centre that is focused on minimally invasive surgery.

The department serves a population of 2.9 million, treating in excess of 1300 patients a year with a full range of adult and paediatric services except transplantation. There is an established robotic programme. We ranked as the provider with the highest percentage of lung cancer surgery performed by minimally invasive means with the shortest length of stay.

Main duties of the job

  • Full participation in the thoracic surgery service and provision of expertise and support to other specialists as required.
  • Operating lists (VATS expertise is essential)
  • MDT meetings
  • Outpatient clinics (including peripheral clinics - virtual)
  • Ward rounds

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • GMC registration with a licence to practice
  • Specialist Registration with GMC

Desirable

  • Higher research degree (e.g., MD/PhD)

Previous or relevant experience

Essential

  • Appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
  • Minimum of 1 year experience at a senior registrar (ST7-8 or equivalent) level
  • Experience of performing thoracic surgical operations as primary surgeon
  • Experience of managing thoracic surgical patients throughout the patient pathway
  • Ability to lead the thoracic surgery team.
  • Able to perform surgery with advanced VATS technique
  • Experience in working in a major trauma centre and able to perform open reduction and internal fixation of rib fracture

  • Previous experience at consultant level in thoracic surgery
