This is a unique opportunity to join the HPB and Acute Surgery teams at University Hospital Southampton (UHS)
UHS is a major regional teaching hospital with a substantial HPB and acute surgical work load, generated by its growing district hospital population and the hospital's regional status. From April 1st 2012 UHS became a designated trauma centre.
The Acute Surgery (ASU) team is currently in the process of expanding from 6 to 8 surgeons in order to create hybrid jobs involving elective subspecialty GI surgery and acute general surgery. In addition to the new two consultant posts, there are also two vacancies due to retirement. The two vacancies are available immediately but the additional two posts are currently going through the Trust's process of business case. The successful appointee will be able to take an appointment immediately as part of the original team of 6 ASU consultants which will eventually increase to 8 once all appointments are in place.

WHAT YOULL DO
The successful appointee will be able to take an appointment immediately as part of the original team of 6 ASU consultants which will eventually increase to 8 once all appointments are in place. The successful appointee will work very closely with a team of 7 HPB surgeons.
The surgical take:
The acute surgeon will be responsible for leading the take. You will be responsible for leading the delivery of emergency surgery in the CEPOD theatres. The surgical bleep holder is a core member of the adult and paediatric trauma team. UHS was designated as a Major Trauma Centre (MTC) in 2012 and the acute surgery team are key to working with multi-disciplinary specialties to support MTC requirements.
The take surgeon focuses on the new patients and actively reviewing progress of ward inpatients.
The acute ward and Acute Surgical Unit (ASU):
Acute surgical assessment and admission will occur through our ASU. The ASU comprises an acute surgical assessment area with 2 x 4 space trolley assessment bays, and 4 side rooms. An outpatient consultation room is adjacent to the acute surgery unit as is a 30 bed acute surgical ward.
Ambulatory Care:
The acute team runs a daily outpatients acute clinic Monday to Friday each weekday to enable admission avoidance, early discharge and fast-track emergency patients requiring review outside of normal OPD activity.
This is supported by dedicated investigative capacity:
WHAT WERE LOOKING FOR
- Entry on GMC Specialist Register; eligible for entry on Register or within six months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at time of interview
- Success in Intercollegiate Specialty Examination or equivalent
- Higher Qualification in specialty i.e. FRCS
- Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT in General Surgery
- Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems in HPB surgery
- Wide experience in General Surgery
- Experience of supervising Foundation and core trainees
- Ability to teach clinical skills
- Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems
Experience of audit management
