Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Breast Unit at the University Hospitals Southampton, to spend 12 months working as a Senior Clinical Fellow in Oncoplastic Breast Surgery for specialist training in oncoplastic breast surgery. This would be ideally suited to someone towards the end of their training, who is looking to consolidate their breast surgery skills, prior to transitioning to their first consultant post.

The Breast Service at Southampton receives over 6000 new symptomatic referrals, as well as screening patients, and treats over 600 newly diagnosed breast cancers a year. Oncoplastic surgical techniques are routinely employed including therapeutic mammoplasties, and partial breast reconstruction using pedicle flaps. We also perform immediate and delayed breast reconstructions using ADMs and implants, both for patients with known cancers, but also as a risk reducing procedures as well.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES

WHAT YOULL DO

The position holder will work 40 hours a week with primary focus on training in oncoplastic breast surgery. The successful applicant will have a theatre sessions with a particular focus on advanced oncoplastic breast surgery training including post-mastectomy reconstruction, perforator flaps and therapeutic mammoplasty. The rest of the time will be spent in clinic-based activity, multidisciplinary meetings, teaching and specialist clinics. There will be some requirement for service provision in the form of new patient clinics (1-stop / screening recall) or covering the operating theatre for consultant annual leave arrangements, providing opportunity for independent operating and consolidation of training with consultant oversight. There is no commitment to the General Surgery on-call rota or out-of-hours on-call commitment. However, the post holder will be expected to provide support for the management of urgent and emergency breast cases during normal working hours. The duties will be in line with the trust and departments commitment to have a sustainable, reliable and high-quality service in place that meets and exceeds the national standards. Of note the post is currently in the process of obtaining approval to be a Royal College of Surgeons accredited fellowship.

WHAT WERE LOOKING FOR

This post is ideally suited to trainees who have completed or are near the end of their higher surgical training, are comfortable with performing the index procedures in breast surgery and want to build and consolidate their experience of oncoplastic breast surgery before taking on a consultant position. The successful candidate will be expected to deliver clinical excellence within the speciality of Breast Surgery. Although training will be provided all aspects of breast disease management, the focus will particularly be on specialised oncoplastic techniques including advanced breast conservation including mammoplasty, partial breast reconstruction using perforator flaps and complete autologous and implant based breast reconstruction. A willingness to learn and work within a constantly changing environment is necessary, together with adaptability to clinical and service requirements. The interview date is to be confirmed.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust appointed (non-training fellow doctors and dentists).

Successful candidates will have an educational framework equivalent to training grade doctors, and there will be a named educational supervisor assigned at the start of the post. The opportunity for Continued Professional Development (CPD) is highly supported and encouraged by the Trust, with options available to take study leave. All licensed doctors must meet the GMC requirements for revalidation and there will be an annual appraisal to support this process.

Grades for Trust appointed (non-training) fellows will be paid a basic salary at a nodal pay point linked to the grade, at the rate set out in the National Medical and Dental pay circular. Basic salary detailed below plus any additional remuneration (as applicable) for hours set out in the doctors work schedule (e.g. additional hours, weekend allowance, and any hours which attract enhanced pay)

Have a minimum of 6 years of Specialty training
