Job summary

Applications are invited for 2 full time Speciality doctors or FY3s in Palliative Medicine at Mountbatten Hampshire Hospice and Southampton General Hospital. This is a new unique and exciting post that will be based with the palliative care teams at Mountbatten Hampshire and the Palliative and Supportive Care Team at Southampton General Hospital. The post-holder will work flexibly across sites depending on service and personal development needs. There is a 1/6 on-call commitment to cover the inpatient unit. Part time applications will be considered.

This is a fantastic opportunity for any doctor who wishes to gain experience in palliative medicine or to pursue a career in palliative medicine. This post will suit a doctor who already has some experience in Palliative Medicine and may be planning to follow a career in the specialty but wishes to have additional experience prior to application for Specialty Training.

Job responsibilities

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES

WHAT YOULL DO

The post holder will work flexibly across Mountbatten Hospice inpatient /community services and UHS Palliative and Supportive Care Team according to service and personal development needs.

On the inpatient unit, the post holder will be responsible for the day-to-day management of patients admitted to Mountbatten under the supervision of the Palliative Medicine Consultants and Specialist Doctors. The post holder will work alongside a Specialty Registrar, Speciality Doctor, GP Specialty and FY2 Trainees and will be an integral part of the multidisciplinary ward team. Responsibilities will include attending and contributing to: the admissions meeting, daily ward rounds, weekly consultant ward round family meetings, weekly complex patient MDT and M+M meeting, and IMEG meetings (via remote access to SGH).

In the community team, the post holder will be involved in the care of patients with the Mountbatten community team under the supervision of the Palliative Medicine Consultants and Specialist Doctor. Responsibilities will include conducting domiciliary visits, outpatients, phone support and working with community nurse specialists.

Within the hospital team, the post-holder will work alongside the team to provide symptom control advise and support to patients in the acute hospital. The team sees patients throughout the hospital, including on the critical care units. The post-holder will attend the weekly hospital MDT meeting. There may also be the opportunity, depending on experience, to take part in the developing outpatient service

There may also be opportunities to be involved with Palliative Medicine research that is happening in Southampton

There are opportunities for audit, quality improvement, management experience and teaching.

WHAT WERE LOOKING FOR

Applicants should have full GMC registration with license to practice.

Completion of Foundation Training is essential. Postgraduate experience in palliative medicine or relevant specialty is desirable.

MRCP (UK) full diploma or MCEM (Full) or MRCGP (full, with CCT) or MRCS (Full) or FRCA (Full) or FRCS or EEA eligibility is preferable. Other qualifications or previous experience in Palliative Medicine or medical education would be desirable.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust appointed (non-training fellow doctors and dentists).

Successful candidates will have an educational framework equivalent to training grade doctors, and there will be a named educational supervisor assigned at the start of the post. The opportunity for Continued Professional Development (CPD) is highly supported and encouraged by the Trust, with options available to take study leave. All licensed doctors must meet the GMC requirements for revalidation and there will be an annual appraisal to support this process.

Grades for Trust appointed (non-training) fellows will be paid a basic salary at a nodal pay point linked to the grade, at the rate set out in the National Medical and Dental pay circular. Basic salary detailed below plus any additional remuneration (as applicable) for hours set out in the doctors work schedule (e.g. additional hours, weekend allowance, and any hours which attract enhanced pay)

The successful candidate will be employed under the terms and conditions of service for Specialty Doctors England (2021)

Salary will be assessed in line with terms and conditions £45,124 - £77,519

FY3
