Job summary

We are seeking a full time band 5 Speech and Language Therapist, with an interest in working within the Forensic setting. This is a 1 year fixed term post.

You will work within the Women's and Personality Disorder Services to support patients with mental health difficulties and communication needs to access high quality rehabilitation. You will work directly with patients to understand their communication strengths and needs, to provide direct treatment to improve communication skills, to support patients in accessing other therapies, and work with teams to deliver best communication environments.

You will have support from a Clinical Lead SLT, a Day Service Manager and will work with SLT assistants, apprentices and other SLTs. You will work with strong Therapies and Education teams to address communication needs in a variety of clinical settings.

Main duties of the job

Direct care duties will include

  • Facilitating and interpreting assessments of SLCN
  • Supporting junior colleagues' clinical practice, and providing second opinions
  • Providing written information regarding patients' SLCN in the form of reports, care plans and easy read information
  • Engaging in joint goal setting with the patient and wider MDT
  • Accurate record keeping and caseload administration
  • Appropriate understanding and management of any safeguarding concerns
  • Directly providing, or developing and supporting other staff to deliver, direct interventions to address SLCN and dysphagia. This may be through 1:1 or group interventions
  • Supporting offender/ psychological programmes to optimise accessibility

Indirect duties will include;

  • Working in a manner informed by key care drivers for people with mental health needs, such as Trauma Informed Care, reducing restrictive practices and person centred care.
  • Supporting the Clinical Leads in identifying and addressing service development needs
  • Advising on environmental adaptations and good practice in regards to SLCN and dysphagia
  • Actively seeking CPD and self-directed learning
  • Sharing knowledge and skills to assist with workforce development
  • Delivering training for other staff on SLCN
  • Prioritising and balancing direct patient care and administrative duties
  • Modelling good communication practices and supporting others in implementing the same
