Job summary

This post provides an exciting opportunity for a speech and language therapist to move into a highly specialist role within the clinical area of Stroke Rehabilitation, joining our dynamic team of Band 7 leaders across community SLT services.

0.5 WTE (2.5 days a week) Band 7 Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist post in the Mid Notts Community Team based at Mansfield Community Hospital but also working in the Newark locality.

It is a responsibility of this post to co-ordinate the development and implementation of a small team of volunteers who provide a valuable service as communication partners for people living with aphasia. Additionally, the post holder is responsible for co-ordinating the provision of bespoke aphasia rehabilitation packages via specific therapeutic Apps that have been loaded onto loaned iPads. Patients are able to work through custom designed therapy without leaving their homes.

Main duties of the job

To provide a Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapy Service to Mid Nottinghamshire Community patients with swallowing and communication problems who are on the Stroke Pathway or who have a recent diagnosis of stroke.

To take a lead role in assessment and treatment of a caseload of patients with complex communication and swallowing needs.

To participate in multi-disciplinary assessment and therapy where appropriate and to engage with the agencies that can support service users and their carers during their rehabilitation journey, and to live well with chronic conditions such as aphasia

To provide day-to-day co-ordination, support and clinical supervision of Speech and Language Therapists, SLT assistants, and students.

To contribute to service development initiatives and audit where appropriate.

To co-ordinate the maintenance and distribution of the Aphasia Therapy iPads and continuing to monitor the outcomes of this project.

Job responsibilities

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Speech and Language Therapist with highly specialist skills within the clinical area of stroke rehabilitation . They will have experience of working with patients who have both communication and swallowing disorders, in community settings. The successful candidate will provide clinical leadership; take a lead role in the assessment and treatment of a complex and diverse caseload of patients, and provide day-to-day co-ordination, support, clinical supervision and appraisal of less experienced Speech and Language Therapists, an SLT assistant, and students. They will coordinate and deliver specialist training to other professionals, as required, and will become involved in service-wide initiatives related to their clinical specialism

The role also involves working closely with other Band 7 team leaders across the South and Mid-Notts Community Teams. The post holder would be expected to contribute to ongoing service development, innovation and improvement.

The successful post-holder will have experience of working in the community and enjoy working as part of a uni-professional team. The post holder will have extensive experience of managing patients with stroke, be able to identify patients needs, and offer appropriate packages of care. They will also have experience of supervising SLT assistants and junior SLTs. They will have experience of using AAC in a clinical setting and using technology therapeutically.

The SLT department offers close support from other team members, a peer supervision programme, and line management will be provided by the Pathway Leads. We are a large Nottinghamshire county wide service which provides opportunities to further develop specialist skills and knowledge.

  • Recognised Speech and Language Therapy Degree Qualification
  • Health Professions Council License to Practice
  • Registered member of RCSLT

The post-holder will be required, to travel out from the base to attend training events, meetings, domiciliary visits etc. However, since Covid, there has been an increase in home working and the use of digital technology allowing meetings and supervision to take place via Microsoft Teams. This platform has also been used to provide individual patient assessment and management, also group therapy. This is an exciting time with more development to come in the use of telehealth.
