Job summary
Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Clinical Teaching Fellow in Trauma & Orthopaedics (T&O), based at Musgrove Park Hospital. This role provides an excellent 50/50 split between clinical orthopaedic practice and undergraduate teaching for Bristol Medical School. It is ideally suited to doctors who have completed core surgical training and wish to strengthen both their surgical and educational portfolios prior to applying for higher training, or to existing trainees seeking additional experience.
You will join an established team of 11 Clinical Teaching Fellows across multiple specialties, supported by the Undergraduate Education Faculty and administrative team. Musgrove Park Academy--currently Bristol Medical Students' 'Academy of the Year'--offers state of heart facilities, including simulation suites, clinical teaching rooms, a well resourced library and extensive IT support.
The post includes funding for a PGCert in Medical Education, study leave, access to a Simulation "Training the Trainers" course, and opportunities for educational research, QI, audit and presentation at the Somerset NHS FT Annual Training Awards.
Main duties of the job
Clinical Responsibilities (50%)
Participate in the Orthopaedic middle grade rota (1 in 8), joining a team of 7 ST3--8 trainees.
Undertake on call duties including post take ward rounds, emergency theatre and assessment of new admissions.
Contribute to elective and trauma theatre lists, fracture clinics and outpatient clinics across subspecialties, including arthroplasty, spinal surgery, upper limb, foot and ankle and paediatric orthopaedics.
Participate in departmental audit, clinical governance, health improvement and research, with opportunities for publication and presentation.
Act as rota organiser for the registrar group.
Teaching Responsibilities (50%)
Teach medical students from Bristol Medical School across Years 2, 3, 4 and 5, with current emphasis on Years 2, 3 and 5.
Deliver case based learning, lectures, seminars, anatomy teaching, clinical skills sessions and simulation teaching.
Provide some generic (non T&O) teaching such as case based learning and pharmacology.
Develop and refine teaching materials and approaches with faculty support.
Identify student learning needs and plan teaching to meet defined objectives.
Supervise student work, support study skills and provide academic guidance.
Offer pastoral support, identifying "at risk" students and referring appropriately.
Assess learners via OSCEs, long cases and work place based assessments (CBDs, miniCEX, DOPS).
Support fellow Clinical Teaching Fellows and contribute to development of eSSC projects for students.
