Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity for a registered nurse to join the team on the Beacon day unit and contribute to the provision of a high standard of evidenced based practice and ensure the safe delivery of Systemic Anti-Cancer Treatment (SACT) to our oncology and haematology patients. You will be required to demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills and have the ability to develop the practical skills required to work within this speciality, whilst reflecting the units philosophy of care.

You will be required to deliver patient care, using the systems in place in the department for a multi-disciplinary approach to patient-centred care delivery, which builds on the philosophy of greater involvement of patients and their relatives/carers by using the Trusts patient and public involvement strategy.

We value our RNs highly, development and training within this role will be offered and prioritised to ensure you achieve the skills necessary to obtain competency to deliver SACT. There is an expectation that hours are worked flexibly on a rota basis, Monday to Friday

The successful candidate will have a team work approach and be able provide a high standard of nursing care with the support of the team.

Main duties of the job

To provide and maintain a high standard of evidence based, patient centred care. To demonstrate good interpersonal skills and to develop practical skills required within the speciality, whist reflecting the philosophy of care.

To deliver patient care on a daily basis, using the systems in place in the department for a multi-disciplinary approach to patient-centred care delivery, which builds on the philosophy of greater involvement of patients and their relatives/carers by using the Trusts patient and public involvement strategy.

Develop skills such as IV drug administration, cannulation, venepuncture and venesection

Develop a sound understanding base in relation to the safe handling and administration of intravenous therapeutic agents including cytotoxic chemotherapy

Develop a sound understanding in the use and care of peripheral and central venous catheters

Develop a good level of understanding and knowledge of oncology and palliative care conditions their treatments and care required.

Develop a good knowledge of treatment side effects and care, and provide patient and carers with advice and support in relation to health promotion, neutropenic sepsis, and hair loss and other treatment side effects

Experienced Band 5 post holders will also provide effective clinical and managerial leadership of the department, in the absence of the senior members of the team, which empowers staff to deliver patient- centred, evidence based nursing care

Act as a link nurse for nutrition, diabetes or control of infection by attending meetings held by the appropriate specialist nurse and bringing back and communicating to staff through the regular monthly unit meetings any changes in practice

Provide counselling and support to patients and carers in coping with their illness and treatment on a daily basis

Manage own time and plan and organise workload effectively

Contribute to the planning and organising of any service improvements or developments

Makes judgement when dealing with enquires, to resolve problems for patients and staff.
