Job summary
Join a dynamic Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery team at Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton, part of Somerset NHS Foundation Trust. This Specialty Doctor post offers 10 sessions per week, with a tailored job plan and opportunities to work across Yeovil District Hospital and community sites serving a population of 600,000. You'll deliver high-quality oral surgery and maxillofacial care across outpatient, day case, and inpatient settings, with potential participation in the second-tier on-call rota depending on experience.
Your role will include managing dento-alveolar surgery, minor trauma, infections, and soft tissue procedures, while supporting trainees and contributing to audit, governance, and service development. You'll also play an active part in postgraduate teaching and research, helping shape the future of the department.
The department boasts modern facilities including digital imaging, CBCT, and dedicated day surgery theatres, with strong links to oncology, dermatology, orthodontics, and restorative dentistry. Main duties of the job
Provide oral surgery services (minor oral surgery, infections, minor trauma, soft tissue surgery).
Deliver inpatient, day case, and outpatient care to a high standard.
Assist in clinics, theatres, and day surgery sessions.
Support and supervise first-tier trainees, escalating appropriately.
Contribute to the development of sub-specialty interests that complement departmental needs.
Participate actively in clinical audit, governance, and service development.
Maintain accurate clinical documentation and clear communication with patients and colleagues.
Engage in continuing professional development (CPD) and the SAS development programme.
Contribute to teaching of postgraduate staff, medical students, and other Trust staff.
Undertake and promote research initiatives within the department.
Comply with Trust policies on clinical governance, health & safety, and incident reporting.
Undertake administrative duties associated with patient care.
Work collaboratively with consultants and the Clinical Director to ensure efficient use of resources.
Participate in appraisal, audit, and patient feedback processes to improve care delivery.

- Full registration with the General Dental Council (GDC).
- MFDS/FDSRCS or equivalent postgraduate qualification.
- Minimum of three years' experience in a recognised Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery department.
- Wide clinical experience and practical skills in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery.
- Ability to provide clinical opinion on a broad range of emergency and elective problems within the specialty.
- Capability to take responsibility for patient care under consultant guidance.
- Strong organisational and time management skills to manage clinics, operating sessions, and priorities.
- Team player with flexibility and excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Commitment to teaching and education, with willingness to participate in undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
- Experience in clinical audit and readiness to register for Continuing Medical Education (CME).
