Job summary
We are looking for a highly skilled and motivated Statistician to join our Data Science team within the Strategy & Digital Directorate. This is an exciting opportunity to support meaningful research, strengthen analytical capability across the organisation, and help deliver improvements that directly benefit staff, patients, and the wider Somerset community.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys solving complex analytical challenges, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, and using data to generate real-world impact.
Main duties of the job
As our Statistician, you will:
Provide expert statistical support
- Offer guidance on study design, monitoring, data analysis and dissemination of research results.
- Support both internal and external researchers through our statistical consultancy service.
Collaborate across the system
- Work closely with clinicians, healthcare professionals, social care providers, academics, and colleagues across the Somerset system.
- Translate complex statistical findings into clear, accessible insights for non-statisticians.
Drive analytical excellence
- Lead on choosing and applying appropriate statistical methods, including trial design, Bayesian approaches, handling missing data and evidence synthesis.
- Investigate and resolve complex statistical queries where no precedent exists.
Develop tools and systems
- Design, build and maintain software, analytical tools, and database systems using Python, SQL, and other technologies.
- Support continuous improvement through adapting to new technologies and practices.
Grow capability
- Develop and deliver training on statistical methods to enhance skills across the organisation.
- Promote research, improvement methodologies and evidence based decision making.
