The Ambulatory care unit is responsible for providing medical intervention within the clinic setting for ambulant patients.
The nurse will need to be competent or working towards being competent in the following skills.
*blood transfusions -
*iron infusions
*routine catheter changes (Male, Female and Suprapubic)
*chemotherapy pump removal
*central line care and removal
*intravenous antibiotics
*cardiac monitoring tapes up to 7 days
*ABPI Dopplers
Due to the nature of the unit the nurse needs to be NMC qualified. It is also important that the nurse has a good knowledge of IT skills as the unit is mainly electronical with the booking system and all notes being on a system called RIO.
It is also essential that the nurse is able to identify deterioration and allergic reactions and know the process of escalation. Sepsis is also an important as most of the patients that the unit deals with are immune suppressed due to chemotherapy.
Main duties of the job
*The post holder will be responsible for the day to day running of the clinic completing discharge letters, taking referrals form GP's, hospitals or district nurses, or referring patients on to specialist like urology and booking routine appointments
*The post holder will need to be confident at using a computer as the unit is all computer based
*The Band 5 nurse will be responsible for making sure that checks are completed in the unit e.g., resus bag, fridge, Audits
*The nurse will be responsible for making sure that there is sufficient stock ordered so that the unit can run effectively and using resources appropriately. As well as participate in rotation of stock to include medicine, dressings, minimising wastage
*This role will require the nurse to practice autonomously and make decisions under their own initiative using past professional judgment and drawing on their clinical expertise
