Estates Building Maintenance Craftsperson Carpenter

Job summary

We are seeking a proactive and skilled Carpenter to join our Estates Maintenance team, where you will play a vital role in delivering both planned and reactive maintenance services.

Your work will directly contribute to ensuring a safe, functional, and welcoming environment for patients, visitors, and staff across the Trust. As part of a dedicated team operating in a fast-paced and dynamic setting, you will be responsible for maintaining high standards of safety and compliance.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a strong work ethic, technical expertise, and a commitment to supporting healthcare through effective estate management.

This positioned offered an additional Recruitment and Retention payment of £3,200 per annum.

Main duties of the job

  • Carrying out planned and reactive maintenance across hospital sites.
  • Installing, repairing, and maintaining doors, windows, flooring, ceilings, signage, locks, glazing, and basic plumbing.
  • Manufacturing and fitting items such as shelving, notice boards, partitions, and frames.
  • Working collaboratively with ward staff, contractors, and other trades.
  • Diagnosing faults and interpreting technical drawings and specifications.
  • Ensuring compliance with health and safety standards and hospital regulations.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Have the ability and training to diagnose and repair faults in plant and equipment and be able to pass knowledge to others

Have the ability to understand the working of the building/construction/maintenance requirements of NHS buildings

Use of Hospital Technical Memorandums, Hospital Building Notes and otherdocuments related to safe operation of Hospital Building.

The ability to fulfil a requirement to interpret and work from all instructions, drawings, and

specifications appropriate to original trade without supervision. Advise on changes required to

drawings etc., to keep system up to date following new works.

Ensure specialist stock and materials are ordered to fulfil the need to ensure the maintenance

and repair of Trust properties and equipment.

Be able to instruct others on aspects of own work relating to original trade, including other trades

Staff, maintenance assistants and contractors.

Liaise with ward/department Managers to arrange access for all building repair and maintenance.

Learn new techniques with additional training to own trade.

Have a good understanding of the workings of other trades in relationship to your own, Exposure

to heat, noise, body fluids, chemical hazards and sewage, continual lifting (occasionally heavy).

An ongoing requirement to exert moderate physical effort and frequent requirement for

concentration i.e. fault finding, interpretation of drawings. Occasional exposure to highly

unpleasant working conditions i.e. sluices, infected areas, blocked drainage, deep cleans, barrier

cleans. Prepared to work outside and at times at height from ladders, mobile platforms and fixed platforms

Required to follow Trust & Directorate Procedures and participate in audits from internal and external sources

Any other duties within the Estates function which may be required by the Maintenance Manager

within the scope of the individual's competence or as laid down in agreements between the Department of

Health and Social Security and Trade Unions.
