Somerset NHS Foundation Trust

Capsule Sponge Nurse Specialist

The closing date is 18 September 2025

Job summary

We are looking for two enthusiastic and motivated Capsule Sponge Nurse Specialists to join our Endoscopy team. This is an exciting opportunity to be at the forefront of delivering innovative alternatives to conventional endoscopy, working on the Cytosponge (Capsule Sponge) project -- a pioneering approach to identifying patients at high risk of Barrett's oesophagus.

Initially, the project will focus on case finding, but with future plans to expand, this is a chance to shape and grow a service that has the potential to transform patient pathways across Somerset.

What We're Looking For

A registered nurse (NMC) with experience in gastroenterology, endoscopy, or a related specialty.

Strong clinical skills, with confidence to work both independently and as part of a team.

Excellent communication and organisational skills, with the ability to support and reassure patients.

Attention to detail, strong IT skills, and confidence in maintaining accurate clinical and audit records.

Flexibility to travel across sites in Somerset as required.

Why Join Us?

Be part of an innovative and expanding service that is shaping the future of endoscopy.

Work within a supportive and forward-thinking multidisciplinary team.

Gain opportunities for professional development, audit, and research involvement.

Help deliver high-quality, patient-centred care that makes a real difference.

Main duties of the job

As a Capsule Sponge Nurse Specialist, you will:

Deliver and manage Cytosponge endoscopy procedures, working autonomously within agreed protocols.

Support patients and their families with clear information, advice, and education throughout their care pathway.

Work closely with clinical leads, endoscopists, managers, and wider stakeholders to optimise patient pathways.

Maintain the highest standards of safety, care, and quality in line with national and Trust guidelines.

Contribute to service development through audit, research, and patient feedback.

You will also play a key role in communication, documentation, and ensuring seamless patient care across multiple hospital and community sites.

This role includes participation in the endoscopy nurse on-call rota.

If you're passionate about advancing endoscopy services, enjoy working autonomously, and are motivated by improving patient care, we would love to hear from you.

Apply now to be part of this exciting new service in Somerset.
