Somerset NHS Foundation Trust

Locum Consultant Urologist

The closing date is 22 August 2025

Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity for a Consultant Urologist to join Somerset NHS Foundation Trust in a key leadership role focused on cancer improvement and pathway development. Based in Yeovil District Hospital, the successful applicant will take a leading role in redesigning and optimising cancer care pathways, particularly for bladder and prostate cancers. The role combines clinical expertise with strategic influence and is well-suited to a dynamic, forward-thinking clinician with a strong interest in service improvement, quality governance, and patient-centred innovation.

The Consultant Urologist will act as the Trust's clinical lead for urological cancer pathway transformation, contributing to the delivery of national priorities such as the Faster Diagnosis Standard and the 62-day cancer target. The role involves working closely with multidisciplinary teams across surgery, diagnostics, and cancer services, with a strong emphasis on improving patient flow, reducing variation, and embedding evidence-based, risk-stratified care. The postholder will lead quality improvement initiatives across the prostate and bladder cancer pathways, support the redesign of the MDT process to enhance efficiency, and provide expert clinical input into Trust-wide and system-level cancer performance programmes. There is a strong emphasis on collaboration, data-driven decision-making, and shaping the future of cancer services through innovative and sustainable models of care.

Main duties of the job

The main duties of this role focus on leading and supporting improvements across the Trust's urological cancer pathways, with particular emphasis on bladder and prostate cancer. The postholder will provide visible, proactive clinical leadership to the redesign of the bladder cancer diagnostic and treatment pathway, ensuring alignment with national best practice and GIRFT recommendations. This includes optimising scheduling for transurethral resection of bladder tumour (TURBT) and contributing to weekly multidisciplinary meetings to prioritise theatre capacity and reduce cancer target breaches.

In the prostate pathway, the successful candidate will lead innovation projects focused on managing PIRADS 3 lesions, working with radiology and primary care to explore alternatives to biopsy and co-design risk-stratified referral and follow-up pathways. They will also support the training of staff involved in the prostate pathway and help embed new protocols and tools.

The role also includes responsibility for streamlining the urology cancer multidisciplinary team (MDT) function. The postholder will lead improvements to reduce time from referral to decision-making, review MDT structure and processes, and support the use of digital tools and audits to improve efficiency and compliance with national standards.
