Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen to work within the Upper Gastrointestinal Cancer Nursing Team based in Yeovil District Hospital. Our Upper Gastrointestinal Cancer team is Nurse led with support from our Consultant colleagues.
You would join this well established and highly regarded UGI cancer specialist nursing service. We are looking for an for a highly motivated and enthusiastic registered nurse with excellent communication skills who has a passion and drive for delivering patient centred care and services.
The post holder will manage a caseload of patients and be a support to UGI cancer patients and their carers. Acting as a key worker you will use and apply expert knowledge of cancer treatment to oversee and co-ordinate services and personalize the pathway of care for individual patients.
You will need the ability to work both independently and as a member of the specialist UGI cancer multidisciplinary team. You should have demonstratable knowledge of Gastrointestinal Surgery and/or Gastroenterology and an awareness of both local and national cancer guidelines and pathways, which would be supported to develop.
There is an expectation that hours are worked flexibly over a rota basis to maintain and deliver our service.

Main duties of the job
Work with the B8 lead CNS and wider multi-disciplinary team to coordinate and develop the Upper Gastrointestinal care pathway for patients with suspected or confirmed UGI cancer diagnosis in line with national guidance, policy and The Quality Surveillance Programme.
Follow a training programme to achieve competencies encompassing clinical knowledge, support and care for patients and their families and carers.

Share knowledge and expertise with primary and community services to improve other health and social care professionals' understanding of cancer.
Work collaboratively with other clinical teams, community and primary services to improve services and patient access, and the experience and outcomes for people with cancer. Including Oncology, Radiology, Gastroenterology, end of life care and social/economic issues as it is recognised many patients on a cancer pathway have multiple comorbidities requiring more than one expert opinion. Act as a key worker in communicating outcomes of discussions to the patient and carers, and advocate for the patient ensuring their wishes are recognised and followed.
