Job summary
Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Specialist Breast Clinician to join its dynamic and supportive Breast Care team, primarily based at Musgrove Park Hospital, with services also delivered at Yeovil District Hospital. The successful candidate will be an experienced and independent medical practitioner with at least 12 years of post-qualification experience and a minimum of 6 years in Breast Care.
If the applicant does not meet the Specialist criteria, their application will be considered, with adjusted duties and pay scale to align to the Specialty Doctor Terms & Conditions & contract.
This role involves delivering high-quality diagnostic and clinical breast services, including breast imaging (ultrasound and mammography), interventional procedures, family history and genetic risk assessments, and active participation in multi-disciplinary team discussions. The postholder will also contribute to teaching, clinical governance, audit, service development, and potentially research. There is no on-call commitment.

Main duties of the job
As a Specialist Breast Clinician at Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, you will play a key role in delivering high-quality breast care services. Your responsibilities will include:
Clinical Care
- Assess, diagnose and manage patients with breast conditions across both screening and symptomatic services.
- Interpret and report breast imaging (ultrasound and mammography) and perform interventional procedures such as biopsies.
- Lead and support Family History and Very High-Risk (VHR) breast services, including genetic risk assessment and appropriate referrals.
Multidisciplinary Team Working
- Actively participate in weekly multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings for both primary and metastatic breast cancer.
- Collaborate with radiologists, breast surgeons, oncologists, pathologists, and other members of the breast care team to ensure coordinated and patient-centred care.
Leadership and Service Development
- Contribute to the development of clinical protocols, guidelines and service improvement initiatives.
- Participate in quality improvement projects, audit, and departmental management activities.
- Take on leadership roles within the team and represent the department in wider Trust initiatives, as appropriate.
Education and Training
- Provide supervision and teaching to junior doctors, specialty doctors, medical students and allied health professionals.
- Contribute to the delivery and development of the breast care teaching programme and wider clinical education.
