We have an vacancy for an apprentice Chef. The successful candidate will be expected to attend Yeovil College alongside working in the Catering department at YDH. Further details to be discussed at interview.
An Apprenticeship is a real job, with hands on experience, training and a salary. Throughout the programme, apprentices will gain the technical knowledge, practical experience and wider skills & behaviours for the job and future career pathways.
Yeovil College - Production Chef Apprenticeship
As part of the Apprenticeship with Yeovil College you will:
Know how to perform basic food processing, preparation and regeneration of food in line with business / brand specifications and identify how to follow kitchen procedures to maintain food safety and quality. (basic food processing and preparation includes for example sandwiches, bar snacks, light bites, compiling desserts, toasted items).
There are 12 workshops in college, 6 practical, 6 theory
Course length is 14 Months + End Point Assessments
Progress reviews held every 8-12 weeks

Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship there may be the potential to be offered a substantive position within the team.
Main duties of the job
Each Catering Assistant/Apprentice Chef plays a vital role in our catering services team. Assisting with the preparation of main courses, cakes and pastry products for Retail and Patients to include training on:
- Allergies and special Dietary requirements.
- Developing Knife skills.
- Delivering food to wards for patients
- Working in our retail outlets
- Making sandwiches etc
- Keeping your workstation clean and tidy,

Job responsibilities
To provide and maintain a safe, clean and tidy environment in accordance with work schedules and instructions, using the appropriate equipment provided.
- Assist in unloading stock from cages/trolleys and place into relevant storage including walk-in freezers as per training.
- To prepare items ready for cooking or cold processing.
- to ensure food items are correctly cooked to achieve relevant temperature, quality and taste standards as per training
- Ensure all catering equipment and manual handling aids provided are used as per training
- Report any equipment failures immediately to the Chef, Sous Chef, team leader, Head Chef or Catering manager
- Listen to instructions given regarding daily tasks and organise within your agreed time frame
- Pay attention to detail
- Ensure good communication
- Report for duty on time with clean and tidy uniform and demonstrate high personal standards.
- Use fleet and other dishwashers to clean crockery, cutlery and catering utensils/equipment.
- Provide general cleaning services to maintain catering areas.
- Make sandwiches/rolls etc. following recipe cards and following established procedures.
- Assist with salad and other basic food preparation.
- Participate in training and development needs.
Provide any other duties which are determined to be reasonable (by the post holder or line Manager), considering the training, skills and abilities of the post holder.
Comply with all SSL Policies and Procedures including (but not exclusively), Quality, Environmental Equality, Diversity, Safety, Human Resources and Financial.
