Job summary

Come and join our Upper GI and Bariatric Surgery team with this exciting Senior Clinical Fellow role based at Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton, Somerset.

The role is available from 1st October 2025 and is fixed term for 12 months. The role is based in Upper Gastrointestinal & Bariatric Surgery and there is a commitment to General Surgery, outpatient work and participation in the emergency on call rota.

There are 4 General Surgery operating theatres, of which one is a dedicated emergency theatre. We have an a Da Vinci robot in one theatre, We are in the process of bidding for a second console for training purposes. We have facilities for laparoscopic ultrasound and laparoscopic choledochoscopy. There is an 18 bedded critical care unit with a 4 bedded surgical HDU along with 2 inpatient surgical wards. Day surgery has 4 additional operating theatres, and the endoscopy unit has 3 suites

You will join a team of 5 Consultants, 1 peri-CCT Clinical Fellow, 2 ST3+ Registrars, 1 Specialty Doctor, 2 ST1 trainees and 4 F1 Trainees.

The bariatric department have 2 nurse specialists, 2 dieticians as well as 3 administrative staff. There are close links with the endocrinologists, anaesthetists, psychologists and gastroenterologists. The department is supported by interventional and cross-sectional radiologists with facilities for on-site CT and MRI, together with ERCP.

Main duties of the job

  • Work as a member of the multidisciplinary Upper GI & Bariatric team to provide specialist Upper GI & Bariatric services for outpatients and on the wards.
  • To work flexibly with the 5 Consultants to ensure cover for wards, outpatient clinics and operating lists.
  • Play a full part in the provision of surgical services, potentially including scheduled out-of- hours work and resident/non-resident on-call duties on a rota basis with colleagues.
  • Be involved in the development and planning of surgical services within the Trust.
  • Undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of patients.
  • Participate in audit examining activity, quality and cost of the surgical service.
  • Participate regularly in medical management and audit meetings.
  • Take part in the appraisal processes of the Hospital and its clinical governance
  • To be managerially and professionally accountable to the Clinical Lead for Upper GI/Bariatric Surgery and the Clinical Director for Acute Surgery.

The surgical work of the Trust includes all District General Hospital surgical specialities including general surgery, gynaecology, maxillofacial surgery, ENT, ophthalmic surgery, urology and orthopaedics as well as specialist surgery such as bariatric surgery, vascular and spinal surgery.

All surgeons and associated staff attend the monthly Directorate meeting, which is held on the same day as the audit session. The audit half day is currently organised on a rolling programme so that a different set of theatre sessions is affected each month. Audit topics are planned and published yearly in advance.

The Bariatric unit has an international reputation for research in this field. Professor Welbourn has an honorary Associate Professor role at University of Bristol. Miss Hollyman is a Consultant Investigator at Exeter Biomedical Research Unit.
