Job summary

A highly credible and inspiring clinical leader who leads by example and empowers others to deliver excellent patient care. This post exists to deliver joined up person centred care by working in partnership with the Service Director and Associate Medical Director to create an environment where colleague satisfaction is high and the very best patient care can thrive.

The post holder will work both operationally and strategically. The directorate has a management and leadership structure made up of the Associate Medical Director, Service Director and this Associate Director of Patient Care post supported by the Clinical Director and Associate Directorate Manager. Working with colleagues within this Senior Leadership Team they will develop and implement the service clinical strategy contributing to the overall Trust strategy and that of the Somerset system.

In conjunction with the Associate Medical Director and the Director of Allied Health Professions the job holder will lead on professional standards, governance, clinical workforce planning, quality and patient safety. The post holder will be accountable for the delivery of core patient and colleague standards across a large, complex directorate with circa. 165m budget and 1,450 employees working across the county.

This role also carries a corporate Trust wide portfolio where the post holder will lead and implement programmes of quality improvement across the whole organisation.

Main duties of the job

Leadership:

To lead an AHP, nursing and non-medical clinical workforce in the move towards delivering more integrated health and care, closer to home and out of hospital

To actively work with patients and service users to improve our services for the people that we serve.

To contribute to the operational and strategic leadership of the wider system.

Governance

To chair the monthly service group governance meetings

To ensure that the Service Group learns from all feedback, incidents and complaints and completes the relevant action plan

To ensure action plans relating to regulatory compliance are monitored

To support robust sub-specialty governance meetings are in place with clear escalation plans for service group governance

To promote and ensure adherence to the Health and Safety at Work Act.

Professional, Clinical and Management Responsibilities

To line manage and support Heads of Service with professional advice, mentoring and other development strategies as an when required.

To mentor Heads of Service in the development of robust workforce plans

To ensure Heads of service promote and respond to NHS Staff Survey responses

Meetings occur in various sites across the county and travel to these areas is required

Finance

To ensure workforce plans implemented minimise the use of premium rate ad hoc shift cover

Lead of the assessment of safer staffing across the Service Group

To participate in the Trust's on-call management rota

  • First level nurse or AHP registration/diploma and evidence of continued personal development
  • First level degree in health related subject
  • Working for or currently at Master's degree level (or has equivalent experience and can evidence ability to think, analyse, reflect and write at this level)
