Job summary
Somerset NHS Foundation Trust are looking for a dynamic and inspiring Occupational Therapist with a special interest in Critical Care to join our team.
This post is based across Critical Care and the acute medical wards, supporting patients when they are acutely unwell as well as delivering specialist Occupational Therapy on the respiratory and cardiology wards including supporting patients to transition between.
At Musgrove Park Hospital we support our Occupational Therapists to use their specialist skills and knowledge to identify the problems preventing patients engaging in their required occupations in preparation for being able to leave hospital. Working with support staff and wider MDT, the postholder will deliver Occupational Therapy to support patients to regain or maintain their function in daily tasks.
The post is a static position giving excellent opportunity to support the development of services, gain specialist skills and knowledge, and build excellent working relationships with the extended multi-disciplinary team and receiving services in the community.

Main duties of the job
To provide a specialist occupational therapy service and early intervention for patients within the intensive care unit and on the cardiology and respiratory wards.
To provide a specialist assessment and treatment service for critically ill patients by working in close collaboration with the Intensive care team to provide the best outcome for patients.
To provide a specialist, occupation-focussed assessment and treatment service for patients within the cardiology and respiratory wards
To act as a specialist resource for the intensive care team, the medical team, other clinicians, and colleagues within the Trust.
To be responsible for managing a complex caseload of patients with a variety of diagnoses and pathologies including post-surgical, general medical, respiratory, neurological and cardiac.
To assist in the development of the service and develop/review clinical protocols for specialised clinical area.
To be responsible for own workload as an autonomous practitioner, ensuring that patients are seen according to clinical need
Oversee the caseload delegated to other staff within the specialty, providing supervision in the form of formal training and clinical reasoning sessions, peer review and case studies as necessary.
To provide effective communication and liaison between patients, consultants, and other medical colleagues and members of the critical care and medical teams.

The post holder will be in a static split role between critical care and cardio-respiratory wards within the medical team. They may be required to offer advice and clinical support to these client groups on out-lying wards.
Clear learning objectives and development opportunities will be set.
The post holder will undertake comprehensive Occupational Therapy assessments of patients by using both standardised and non-standardised assessments to identify deficits and assess the patients occupational performance. The timing of the assessment will be driven by clinical need and with an awareness of targets. The post holder will be expected to use this assessment information to formulate treatment plans/early intervention for patients and allocate treatment sessions as appropriate for both themselves and support staff. These decisions will take into account National standards for Treatment, Trust priorities and Occupational Therapy Department priorities.
They will use highly developed and specialist skills to treat patients on their caseload/ Individualised treatment programmes could include a range of different modalities and clinical approaches e.g. functional activities such as kitchen and washing and dressing tasks, remedial activities to treat cognitive and perceptual problems and trials of postural seating to meet the positioning and seating needs of patients with changing muscle tone. The patients will usually present with diverse, complex or multiple pathologies.
Treatment plans will consider patients own goals and those of the multi-disciplinary team to predict achievable outcomes and recommend the best course of intervention. It will frequently require advanced communication and problem-solving skills. The post holder will be expected to evaluate treatment plans and make adaptation to the individual treatment programme as indicated.
