Job summary

Maternity Support Workers (MSW) Band 3

We are currently looking for keen enthusiastic staff to join our team of Maternity Support Workers. Applicants will need to have good communication skills and be able to cope with quick turnaround of work and stressful situations.

The maternity unit is a friendly unit where you will become part of the team that provides support and care to expectant and new mothers across Somerset.

Our Maternity services cover acute and community working with the LMNS as a Somerset wide provision, as a MSW you will be required to work across the maternity units working on the antenatal ward, labour, birth centres and in post natal wards.

You will work within the multidisciplinary team to provide safe care to our women and their families. As a member of the team you will be expected to adhere to the Trust Core Values, and act as a role model to new staff.

Main duties of the job

The MSW role will assist the midwives in the delivery of care to women in the hospital, whichcarries a defined range of duties delegated by and reported back to the registered member of the multi-professional team. The MSW is able to work regularly without direct supervision, reports any concerns, change in the condition of the woman and baby and highlights incidents to the midwife responsible for care.

The applicant needs to be flexible, hardworking and able to support new mums and babies. The post will be working within the antenatal, labourand postnatal wards, after training - the role will include attending theatre, supporting mums with feeding and caring for their babies and completing maternal observations.

After training the MSWs may serve as a point of contact/support for women and their families and provide clinical, physical, psychological and emotional care and support, providing appropriate information and, where necessary, signpost to wider support organisations. Promoting healthy lifestyle for women including smoking cessation, exercise, diet and drug misuse in line with national recommendations and government initiatives.

Qualifications and Skills

Essential

  • GCSE Maths and English or Functional Skills Maths and English, level 1 or equivalent
  • Car driver with a valid driving licence or ability to travel / have access to transport with appropriate business insurance in order to meet the needs of the service
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively with staff, patients, carers and relatives (as appropriate) remain sensitive and empathetic
  • Polite and coherent in both face to face encounters, and in telephone/online conversations with a good standard of Literacy/English language skills

Desirable

  • NVQ3 in Healthcare OR prepared to undertake a level 3 NVQ in Healthcare and complete within 1 year (to achieve KSF Foundation Gateway)
  • Basic life support training

Knowledge and Experience

  • Understands the need for strict confidentiality

Desirable

  • Previous experience in Maternity care environment
  • Willingness to undertake new skills
  • Training in breastfeeding support
