Job summary

To provide enhanced maternity care and support for women and families with complex social needs (due to eg, domestic violence, mental illness, substance use or where factors have led to a previous significant safeguarding interventions). The aim of the role is to reduce the incidence and impact of these factors on women and their children, through advocacy and individualised support.

The role is based predominantly in a community setting managing a caseload of women who have complex social needs as part of the WREN (Women Requiring Extra Nurturing) Complex Care Team working across Somerset.

The Wren Team are made up of midwives from Yeovil District Hospital and Musgrove Park Hospital, providing seamless cross county care to vulnerable women and their families. To achieve this, the role requires the ability to build effective working relationships with our partner agencies such as children's social care, family intervention services and substance and alcohol services.

Main duties of the job

You will work as a registered midwife accountable for your own midwifery practice and as part of the wider Maternity team in all areas of the Maternity Service as required.

You will be responsible for planning and providing care and support to women and their families throughout the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal period, helping them to make informed choices about their personalised care as well as supporting the wider maternity service with complex care guidance.

Qualifications and Training

Essential

  • Current NMC Registration as a midwife
  • Educated to Diploma/degree level or above
  • Completed preceptorship development programme with a minimum period of post qualification experience
  • Basic neonatal and adult resuscitation
  • Safeguarding (level 3) and domestic abuse training
  • UK driving licence and access to car
  • Ability to work as an autonomous practitioner
  • Able to work flexibly across Trust sites

Desirable

  • Additional qualification in specialist area
  • Experience of working within a specialist safeguarding role
  • Able to participate in on-call roster
