Areyou a passionate and enthusiastic Consultant Gastroenterologist looking to join a supportive and dynamic team?

We are looking for a full time Consultant Gastroenterologist to join our team based at Musgrove Park Hospital, due to colleague retirement and also in response to increasing local demand for endoscopy and outpatient activity. We will consider sub-specialty interests which align with departmental requirements - candidates are encouraged to discuss in advance specific areas of interest and departmental needs.

Main duties of the job

We run a comprehensive gastroenterology and hepatology service to West Somerset with over 4,500 new outpatient referrals annually.We are also the regional hub for the NHS bowel cancer screening programme and offer a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures within a friendly DGH setting.

We have recently received substantial investment from NHS England, which has enabled us to purchase state of the art endoscopic equipment for all our procedure rooms. We have secured investment to increase the size of our satelliteendoscopyunit which will soon have 3 procedure rooms.

The Trust iscurrently undergoing significant modernisationwith a new £80millionsurgical centre/critical carebuild(due completion 2023)incorporatinga new endoscopy suite on theMusgrovePark Hospital site. There has been a further £450million funding secured for site developments currently in discussion.

The Trust

This is a full-time post arisen due to a colleague retirement and to respond to increasing local demand for endoscopy and outpatient activity. An interest in inflammatory bowel is a requirement for this post as we are replacing colleagues who represented this interest. Additional sub-speciality interests will also be welcomed. Appointing the right colleague who will enhance and work within the team is our primary aim.

The department of gastroenterology at Musgrove Park Hospital (Taunton and Somerset Hospital) runs a comprehensive gastroenterology & hepatology service to West Somerset (350,000 population) with over 4,500 new outpatient referrals to the department which are managed through a combination of Advice and Guidance, direct investigation and outpatient review. In addition, there were almost 11,000 endoscopy procedures performed in the last year. There are currently six gastroenterology consultants, an Associate Specialist, a specialty doctor, and the team are supported by sessions provided by 2 retired colleagues enabling us to provide the full range of GI services. Taunton is the regional hub for the NHS bowel cancer screening programme.

We have recently received substantial investment from NHS England which has enabled us to purchase state of the art endoscopic equipment for all our procedure rooms. We have also secured investment to increase the size of our satellite unit in Bridgwater Hospital which will soon have 3 procedure rooms including 1 dedicated to nasal approach OGD and GI physiology. On top of this the Trust is underway with an £80m new surgical centre build which will incorporate a new endoscopy suite on the Musgrove Park site and have also been awarded a further £450m for future site developments for which discussions are currently underway.

Services provided by the Gastroenterology department

Acute Inpatient Care

27 bedded inpatient ward allocated to gastroenterology (Sheppard ward).

Consultants rotate through hot week system for 7 days (care for ward patients, acute GI problems elsewhere e.g. ITU, theatres) gastroenterologist of Week (GoW). This role is supported by a second consultant (buddy role) who manages interdepartmental referrals and the Advice & Guidance service (currently also supported by sessional colleague)

Hot week consultant supported on ward by F1, F2, one ST1/2, Physician Associate (PA) and 3 higher gastroenterology specialty registrars (StR) subject to availability.

Main duties of the post

Clinical Duties

The post-holder will provide, to the highest possible standards, treatment and care to patients with gastroenterological disease in Somerset to a level consistent with the broader vision of a high quality, constantly improving Trust providing excellent clinical services. This will include inpatient, outpatient and endoscopy services.

Participation is expected on the on-call rota for both emergencies and out of hours ward work.

Educational Supervision

Consultants are required to participate in the education of doctors in training. The post holder will be involved with teaching and training junior doctors and should help with both their professional and personal development. Consultants are responsible for the assessment of trainees under their supervision and must keep the Clinical and Educational Supervisor and/or programme leads or College Tutor aware of problems that may arise.

Teaching

The Gastroenterology consultants will provide teaching in Gastroenterology and endoscopy as part of their programme.

Research

The research lead for the department is Dr Emma Wesley. The gastro team has a dedicated research nurse and takes part in commercial and NIHR studies including intervention studies. In addition Dr Jobson has been awarded a £1.4 million grant from NIHR for a project looking at case finding in patients with asymptomatic liver disease.

Clinical Governance

The team constantly strive to improve care, participating in service improvement projects and audit (both local and national). The surgical directorate holds quarterly governance meetings to review any concerns.

Administration/BudgetaryResponsibilities

The nature of secondary care gastroenterology means that the post holders will have responsibility for non-face to face clinical care for their patients, including reviewing results, planning investigations and communicating with patients and their other care providers. Other roles are managed through the Job Planning process. VPN access and a laptop will be provided to ensure maximum flexibility in the post-pandemic era. A basic level of core administrative duties are part of the requirement for delivering a modern consultant role. Gastroenterology offices are all close to each other and we meet regularly. Secretarial services are provided by three secretaries and admin support workers. Each consultant, including this post-holder, has a named shared secretary who coordinates their support.

Appraisal, Job Planning and Mandatory Annual Training

All consultants are required to participate actively in the appraisal and job planning process and are expected to undertake mandatory annual update training.
