Locum Consultant in Vascular Surgery

Job summary

Applications are invited for the post of Locum Consultant in Vascular Surgery at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (CUH) to start from 02 February 2026 to 28 February 2027 with the possibility of extension.

Main duties of the job

The post is intended to maintain the delivery of our Vascular Services across the Vascular Surgery Network without interruption.

Addenbrooke's is the designated Arterial Centre for a network covering West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust, Northwest Anglia Foundation Trust (incorporating Peterborough City Hospital and Hinchingbrooke Hospital), and part of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, King's Lynn catchment.

The overall catchment area is around 1.8m and the Unit is a high-volume Arterial Centre performing around 200 aortic interventions, 100 carotid procedures and 100 peripheral bypass procedures per annum. CUH is also a level 1 adult and paediatric major trauma centre, serving the East of England.

You will be fully registered with the GMC and ideally have a CCT in Vascular Surgery or be within six months of award of CCT at the time of interview. Applications are welcomed from those unable to work full time for personal reasons or those wishing to job-share.

Job description

Job responsibilities

There are strong, close, working relationships with Interventional Radiology, with a complex EVAR Clinical Service, and an established Deep Venous Stenting Programme. There is close working with the complex aortic team at Royal Papworth Hospital, with joint MDT meetings and a joint clinic.

Dedicated multidisciplinary Diabetic Foot services are well established in Addenbrookes Hospital, West Suffolk Hospital, and Peterborough City Hospital, and there is a further opportunity to enhance such delivery at the Spoke Hospitals.

The Vascular Unit is supported by a team of 12 full-time Consultant Vascular Surgeons, a seven Scientist Vascular Studies Unit, a team of Vascular Specialist Nurses (at CUH and spoke hospitals), a large dedicated Vascular Ward, and a Hybrid Operating Theatre. There is ample opportunity for the successful applicant to develop or advance sub-speciality interests within the unit. Complex activity is performed within the unit in all major vascular subspeciality areas.

All the Surgeons spend one day at a Spoke Site, and the successful applicant with be based at both CUH (80%) and West Suffolk Hospital (20%).

There is an active clinical research programme, and many opportunities exist in Cambridge for candidates keen to be involved in research. The hospital is at the heart of the Cambridge Biomedical Campus: http://cambridge-biomedical.com/. Expanding the academic activity and profile of clinical and non-clinical research in the department is a priority.
