Cambridge University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

Patient and Family Engagement Lead

The closing date is 18 June 2025

Job summary

The Trust is undertaking a significant programme of work following concerns raised about the practice of a Trauma and Orthopaedic surgeon who specialises in children.

The primary aim of the programme is to identify and address instances of harm to patients, and to ensure open, sensitive and timely communication with affected patients and their families.

Areas of focus within the programme include:

  • Commissioning an independent clinical review of approximately 700 elective cases and 100 trauma cases

  • Commissioning an independent review of whether lessons can be learned from an earlier report in 2016

  • Liaising with patients and their families sensitively and transparently and creating channels for questions and concerns to be raised.

This programme involves a number of different clinical and non-clinical staff groups across the hospital working together on the areas of focus above, as well as significant interaction with external bodies, often under time pressure.

Main duties of the job

You will lead the Patient & Families engagement response to the clinical incident outlined above at Cambridge University Hospitals.

You will be required to provide expert advice and guidance on all aspects of communications to patients and their families in relation to the incident and engage with relevant patient and public groups, ensuring the patient voice is heard.

You will work in the supporting families and patients team, responding to all engagement requirements in a timely and sensitive manner.

You will be responsible for ensuring the Trust responds in a transparent and sensitive way to all patients and families affected by the incident.

You will report to the Senior Programme Manager for supporting patients and families, working closely with the taskforce team (including clinical, divisional and liaison teams), the Trust communications and engagement Team, patient experience teams and wider incident management structure.

You will lead a programme of co-production and involvement with patients and their families to ensure that CUH responds in an appropriate way, being open and transparent and hearing the voice of patients in relation to this incident.

A priority will be to actively seek out and involve all those affected by the incident, ensuring patients and families have equity of access to the incident support teams.
