Our Brain Bank Research Nurse position offers the perfect opportunity for you.

Cambridge Brain Bank provides quality tissue and data for research into neurodegenerative disorders and other diseases. Individuals with or without neurological conditions can register to donate their whole brain, pituitary and CSF after death.

Youwill support individuals and their families in their wish for brain donation. This involves sensitive and impactful conversations to:

  • register donors
  • seek fully informed consent (from the donor or their representative)
  • coordinate a timely donation pathway, liaising with the bereaved andrelevant professionals

You will be self-motivated with strong attention to detail and able to work autonomously and as part of a team. Most of the work is office-based.

You will assist the technical team, clinical leads and service users by keeping accurate and up to date notes and database records, ensuring procedures are followed, working in accordance with Human Tissue Authority and research governance legislation.

You will be adaptable and resilient to respond to changing service needs and priorities and cope with the demands of the role.

You will be an advocate for the service, presenting at open days or disease-specific clinics / meetings.

Evidence of continuing professional development is essential.

Main duties of the job

The postholder is responsible for donor recruitment and organising the donation of post-mortem CNS tissues including whole brain to Cambridge Brain Bank. They are a key member of a small team that collects and provides quality tissue samples and data for research into neurodegenerative disorders and other diseases to researchers across the Biomedical Research Campus, and both nationally and internationally.

The postholder will:

Use existing pathways to engage potential donors and register them with Brain Bank.

Support and provide information to individuals and their relatives/representatives. Holding high impact, sensitive conversations with sufficient knowledge to answer their questions.

Seek fully informed consent to brain donation.

Coordinate time-sensitive arrangements after each donor death, liaising with relevant professionals to ensure brain donation proceeds whenever possible, whilst assuring and empathising with the bereaved.

Perform administrative tasks with attention to detail, enabling effective communication by telephone, letter and email.

Keep accurate and up to date donor notes, ensuring the continuity of records by scanning and storing them electronically.

Assist the laboratory staff, clinical leads and service users by entering and updating donor and clinical details into local and national information management systems/databases and searching these systems to retrieve information.
