The Ophthalmology Department at Cambridge University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust Addenbrooke's Hospital is looking to recruit an experienced ophthalmic nurse to undertake an exciting challenge and train to become a Medical Retina Specialist Nurse.

There is a full-time 12 month Fixed Term/Secondment position and a part-time Substantive position available with core hours between 08:00 to 17:30 Monday to Friday. However a variety of hours will be considered.

This would be a great opportunity for an existing ophthalmic nurse or an experience adult nurse who is looking for a new career opportunity. We have a variety of nurse-led clinics as well as offering diagnostics and support to our Consultants, doctors and Allied Healthcare Professionals within the department.

The main aspects of the role is to perform intravitreal injections administration and to manage the day to day running of nurse-led clinics within the service.

The job role includes participation in supporting the Medical Retina service in clinic management, clinic co-ordination, auditing, service development, and patient and staff education.

You will need to be comfortable working independently and competent within your own scope of practice.

Within the Eye Department we are responsible for service provision to patients in the Main Outpatients.

Main duties of the job

This position gives a trained ophthalmic nurse the opportunity to develop their competencies, skills and knowledge in Ophthalmology further by commencing in an advanced role within the Medical Retina Service.

The post holder will be responsible for the provision of specialist ophthalmic nursing and carry out specialist nursing procedures for patients with medical retina conditions. This will include the provision of intravitreal injections, fundus fluorescein angiography, Optical coherence tomography (OCT) interpretation, virtual medical retina clinics and nurse-led telephone clinics.

The post holder will act as a coordinator in the medical retina service ensuring patients are seen and assessed by all members of the multidisciplinary team. They will act as first point of contact for medical retina patients who have clinical concerns.

The post holder will be a key member of staff in participating in the development of care of patients attending the medical retina service. They will be working autonomously and are accountable for their own professional actions. They are responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of service users, and always working in a manner that promotes the dignity and human rights of patients and clients.
