Job summary

Cambridge University Hospitals (CUH), via its NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC), works in close partnership with Cambridge Enterprise, the technology transfer company of the University of Cambridge to manage and exploit its intellectual property. This partnership has led CUH and the University to enter into a framework agreement which sets out how they will manage joint research activity and the intellectual property that derives from it.

You will work with the National Institute of Heath Research to develop policies for the effective translation of research and development and would have overall responsibility for translating and developing R&D programmes, through commercialisation, which support the objectives of CUH, and works with NIHR to develop these nationally.

As part of this role, you will develop IP and commercial research opportunities and work with and support Cambridge University Hospitals (CUH) Department of Research and Development and Cambridge Enterprise Technology Managers to identify new ideas, and commercialise intellectual property of commercial value originating from each organisation and in particular research carried out within the NIHR Cambridge Biomedical Research Centre, which is a partnership between Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and University of Cambridge that supports work across Cambridge University Health Partners.

Main duties of the job

Take responsibility for and manage a large portfolio of IP related cases. The post holder will also identify and stimulate the disclosure of new cases arising from BRC or Trust research activities and for all cases will assess and exploit commercially valuable Intellectual Property (IP) arising from the Trust and the University of Cambridge, in particular BRC funded Trust and University research. The role includes day to day, performance management and mentoring of a BRC IP Commercialisation Associate who supports and reports to the post holder.

Work with clinicians and academics on cases including those of a highly complex nature to secure suitable translational resources (IP input into grant and other funding applications, including identifying relevant background IP in grant applications).

Prepare applications to secure any identified suitable developmental resources to add value to inventions.

Be responsible for a thorough market assessment/analysis of the potential market for the invention including detailed analysis of market size, dynamics, segmentation etc.

Lead on all on-going Intellectual Property Management.

  • A postgraduate qualification (PhD) in biomedical/life sciences or applied sciences or a qualified attorney specialising in exploiting intellectual property and commercialisation of outcomes from research.

Desirable

  • ICH Good Clinical Practice training (advanced level within last two years).
  • MBA/Business Administration qualification or other Post-graduate Qualification in law or health service management or significant experience in technology transfer.

Experience

Essential

  • Significant experience in an intellectual property or commercial research position in public, academia and commercial sectors.
  • Significant experience in coordinating and implementing exploitation programmes or activity.
  • Experience of drafting, negotiating and concluding Licensing, Service or Consultancy Agreements, Research and Collaboration Agreements, Confidential Agreements and other IP related Agreements.
