We have an exciting opportunity for a motivated individual to join our Blood Transfusion team as a Band 7 Senior Biomedical Scientist.
You must be a Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) Registered Biomedical, and hold or are working towards an appropriate post graduate qualification in Blood Transfusion (MSc or HSD).
We deliver one of the UKs largest hospital blood transfusion services providing support for CUH's Transplantation Centre, the regional Trauma Centre and the Rosie Maternity and Neonatal units; consequently the department deals with major blood loss on a daily basis. The department processes ~70,000 blood groups and associated antibody investigations and issues ~50,000 blood products annually. We also provide an in house specialist RCI service to the Trust.
You will be primarily responsible for the day to day activities of the team, the entering of complex transfusion results with appropriate interpretive comments and follow-up of overdue and pending test results. You will also be expected to familiar with the management of cold chain equipment and quality requirements for blood transfusion. Experience in serological testing and issuing of blood components are essential.
Main duties of the job
To plan and coordinate the day to day activities of the Blood Transfusion department.
To analyse, interpret and report complex serological investigations and to be responsible for the standard and quality of results released.
To provide specialist advice to a range of service users as to the appropriateness of tests and timescales.
To organise and participate in the training, supervision and development of Transfusion staff.
To work flexibly in reflection of service needs which may include an extended working day and/or participation in delivery of a 24 hour, 7 day per week service.
To deputise in the absence of the Deputy Laboratory Manager & Quality Lead as required.
To maintain and promote a professional image of Pathology.
